Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Coggeshall II on Sat 10 Sep 2022 at 12.00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 160 runs
Match report
They came, they saw, they conquered. Coggy, the league champions, gave the Green a sound thrashing to end their season in style. No great surprise maybe, but their 160 run victory in a match reduced to 35 overs was even more comprehensive than many could have imagined.
Coggy amassed 325-5 thanks primarily to opener Cross who had some fun in cracking 180 off a mere 94 balls. He was dropped early on by a certain great Dane, but let's not dwell on the 160-odd that he scored thereafter. There was a time when Cross & Blackwell were both thrashing the ball to all parts, which put us in a real pickle, until the latter skied one and the catch was held by Joe Young. Economy rates make grim reading for most of our bowlers, though Matt Norris came out best with 2-26 and Ollie Stovell, Joe and Steve Nunn at least claimed a wicket apiece.
Our response never involved a realistic chase and wickets fell at regular intervals. Those losses included Matt shouldering arms to one that nipped back and Ollie playing a limp tap back to the bowler the ball after he had smashed him into the car park. Hansana Gunasekera hung around for a while, but once again Keith Hammond led the way with 86, only perishing when he looked like running out of overs towards the end of the innings with another century beckoning. All that was left was a cameo from Calum McDonald, his unbeaten 22 from just 14 balls included two maximums and provided some light relief at the end of the day.
So we finish the season in mid-table, never really threatening either end of the table, but we'll rest and recuperate over the winter and who knows what next season will bring.
