West Mersea v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Midweek XI on Wed 08 May 2024 at 6pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 1 run
Match report
'Low on quality, but high on excitement' was the summary given by Steve Nunn after this game - and I couldn't agree more.
We should give a huge thank you to West Mersea for getting the game on in the first place. Sure, the outfield swallowed up the ball and everything kept low - but we got our first game in of the season. And on our return to midweek cricket for the first time since 2019 we scraped a victory.
Playing in a weird combo of green tops and white trousers, EAG won the toss and chose to bat. The line up was strong but the performance wasn't and we were quickly reduced to 18-3 after 5 of our allotted 15 (8 ball) overs. After 10 we'd got to 63-5 and concluded on 85-9. Most batters realised that lofted shots for boundaries was the answer but only Daryll Sleeman (top score 22) and Praveeen Amarasinghe (10) were able to deliver. Given the tough batting conditions, 85 felt like a competitive total if we bowled and fielded well.
When EAG took to the field, Luke Coppin was on point straight away taking a wicket in each of his three overs, ending on 3-10. Praveen Amarasinghe took a wicket on debut, but the star bowler was Joe Young who was brought into the attack late on and took 3 for 5 off eleven deliveries.
Wickets fell steadily throughout the Mersea innings, and the result was always in doubt. EAG fielded particularly well, conceeding just 5 boundaries and taking 6 catches in all, with Matt Murray snaffling three of them. Mersea will be kicking themselves that they couldn't win from 82-7, but EAG stuck to their guns and secured a 1 run victory.
It was great to get the season up and running with a win, but most of all - it was fun.
