Brockley v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 03 Sep 2022 at 12 noon
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 38 runs
Match report
Oh dear! If we enjoyed our trip to Maldon last week, we most certainly couldn't say the same about heading to deepest, picturesque Suffolk today: seeking only 150 to win, we succumbed on Nelson and lost by 38 runs.
Shorn of our entire first choice seam attack, our bowlers nonetheless made a determined effort to deny Brockley scoring opportunities and restricted them to 149-9 in their 49 overs. Part of our approach was to use the slope of the pitch to send the ball leg-side where the Brockley batters tried but generally failed to get a bat on it, but there's no denying that the strip itself was not overly kind to the batsmen, being a little two-paced as well as offering variable bounce, but more of that later.
The early exchanges didn't provide too many hints of what was to come as the Brockley batsmen added 42 in 9 quite comfortable overs against Hammonds Ali & Keith; this was the first time I have had the pleasure of seeing a pair of Hammonds take the new ball, though no doubt it must have happened in days gone by. Once Ali got into his rhythm he removed both openers, firstly clipping the top of leg stump and then Hansana Gunasekera took an excellent low catch behind the stumps. Fair play to Fisher, the Brockley batter, who walked once Hansana confirmed he had taken a fair catch. Blondie ended up with 2-28 before handing the baton over to those with more flexibility in their joints. Meanwhile Keith got in on the act, once again displaying the benefits of bowling full and straight as he finished an excellent 12 over spell with 3-31. With skipper Joe Young taking two early wickets (2-35) as he constantly challenged the batters, our hosts slumped to 70-7 and we had only just had drinks; we seemed to be in total command at that point. Unfortunately, the tail contained some experienced batters and despite the fact that both Matt Norris (1-27) and Ollie Licence (1-16) beat the bat on multiple occasions, an unbeaten last wicket partnership of 22 took Brockley to 149-9 at tea.
And tea deserves a mention in itself. Everything in the cricketing world just feels right when we are provided with a tea, but this was an especially good one and I feel it appropriate to congratulate Mrs Chapman for the delightful sandwiches, pastries and cakes that were offered up. Thank you very much.
For the remainder of the day, the positives were limited. Hansana provided most of them as he opened again, this time with Stuart Hammond, the latter striking four boundaries before losing his wicket when on 19. Keith came and went quickly, bowled by a ball that was short enough to pull, but just didn't get up as we slipped to 33-2. There was a brief hiatus in the fall of wickets as Hansana (top scorer with 29) and Tom Lee (12) built our biggest partnership of the day (31 runs), but from 64-2 we lost 8 wickets for a mere 37 runs. Those losses included the comical yes, no, oh blast (insert expletive) run out of Joe, while Ollie (13) fell in almost identical fashion to Keith. Throw in a couple of leg-before decisions, one of which was given despite Ali claiming a substantial inside edge and it all went downhill rather quickly. The asking rate never rose above 4 an over, so we always felt there was a chance to eke out a victory, but with a regular clatter of wickets the denouement arrived when Matt (14) became the sixth member of the team to be bowled and that old cricketing favourite Nelson was forever etched into the record books. Ah well, don't worry lads, we only finish the season next week with a home game against league leaders Coggeshall.
