Nowton v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 16 Jul 2022 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
A fine all-round performance from the Green saw us ease to a five-wicket win in the hot Suffolk sunshine. Although there were stand-out contributions from Calum McDonald and Matt Parker with the ball and Stuart Hammond with the bat, there was much more to this result, with the whole team contributing.
Steve Nunn won the toss and inserted Nowton and for seven overs as their openers accumulated runs it seemed that decision may backfire. That was before Calum struck twice in quick succession to remove both openers, while Matt got his first and suddenly Nowton were in rebuilding mode at 35-3. Although he didn't claim any further wickets, Calum bowled out his miserly 12 over spell with splendid figures of 2-24. Meanwhile, the perennially-smiling JP replaced Matt and took the first of his two wickets with his first ball, a great boost to his self-confidence. JP's second left our hosts at 69-5 before a counter-attack from Cruse & Cordell rescued the innings with a 76 run partnership. Skipper Steve brought that to a halt just when Nowton were thinking they could pass 200 and that was the cue for Matt to come back into the attack and reap the benefits of bowling straight at the lower middle-order; he finished with the none-too shabby figures of 4-36, which was a lovely way to celebrate the day before his birthday (although I think he enjoyed the pint I bought him after the match almost as much!). When Ollie Mewis claimed the last wicket, Nowton were all out for 177, but although it was a relatively low score, we still had lots to do with the pitch offering reasonable help to the bowlers and the variable bounce either making the batsmen hop around or worry about their toes - I don't think I've ever seen so many shooters in a match as today. On such a boiling day in the field credit to the team for sticking at it and an honourable mention to young Ethan Frost who enthusiastically supported the bowlers throughout, never putting a foot wrong in the process.
So we were far from complacent in chasing the victory target, although Deepak Rajpal exuded his usual confidence as he took on the opening bowlers. His highlight was three consecutive boundaries before a skier ended Deepak's afternoon. For a short time our innings had an uncanny resemblance to Nowton's as Joe Young had the misfortune to steer his first ball into slip's hands. Ollie Mewis hung around for a while helping Stuart to rebuild the innings, but then he and Steve fell in quick succession and the match was in the balance again at 83-4. In came Ollie Stovell to play a mature innings in support of Stuart that took us to the brink of victory. Ollie fell for 34 with only three needed for victory, but Stuart calmly saw us home with more than 5 overs to spare. He finished unbeaten on 83 and whilst I can't tell you that it was his most fluent or aesthetically pleasing innings, Stuart was his masterful self in reading the conditions, both of the pitch and the match situation and overcame all the variations to pace the innings perfectly and ensure we left with a well-earned victory.
