Match report Well, that was a disappointment! On our first visit to East Bergholt for many a year, ten-man Eight Ash Green succumbed to a 3 wicket defeat. Of course, closely-fought matches such as these keep you on the edge of your seat, but this week the result fell the wrong way for us.
That we even set Bergholt a half-decent target of 193 looked a long way off when a procession of wickets left us at 96-7. The partial rescue act was led by Jens Wair, ably supported by Matt Parker (20 out of a partnership of 79) and latterly Hansana Gunasekera (10*). But all of the late order efforts were to come. As to what went before, it was slow but steady to begin with as we overcame the early loss of Deepak Rajpal (11). The partnership of Tony Lee (18) and Ollie Mewis (35) reached 50 before Tony was run out (by a good margin) attempting a second. One of the most entertaining elements of the innings was seeing Tony claim several runs that the umpires were considering awarding as leg byes, but our Tony can be charmingly persuasive. Ollie too had a touch of luck as, relatively early in his innings, he and umpire Parker were about the only people in the village not to hear him snick-off against the young Bergholt leggie. The middle-order came and went in quick succession and we were heading for a total of maybe 120 before Jens took on the home attack with some positive stroke-play, to finish unbeaten on 58 and drag us up to a respectable total of 192-8.
This week's opening bowling partnership consisted of the two Matts, Parker (2-42) and Norris (1-20). The former got the innings off to a perfect start, persuading the opening batsman to miss a straight one first-up and when Norris struck soon after we were right in the game. The third wicket partnership steadied the ship before a quick double-strike from Parker & skipper Steve Nunn (1-28) put us back in the ascendency with the score on 59-4. However, Bergholt had other ideas and with an asking rate that never rose above 5 an over they accumulated the runs without taking too many risks. Our attack was taken up by Ollie Stovell as he was given a decent spell and responded with 3-50 to keep our hopes alive. Indeed, the seventh wicket fell with 27 still needed, but it seemed at this point that the extra gaps in the field due to being a man short made the difference and ultimately Bergholt crossed the line with three overs to spare.
