Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Worlington II on Sat 14 May 2022 at 12 noon
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 101 runs
Match report
The Green proved to be far too strong for our visitors from Worlington, winning by the substantial margin of 101 runs as vice skipper Joe Young added to our list of centurions for the season with a fine 107.
The Worlington skipper invited us to bat, but despite the relatively early wicket of the hobbling Ollie Mewis, it was a decision he would go on to regret as we piled up the runs, closing on 274 for 5. Keith Hammond took advantage of two early dropped catches to claim another half century, although he didn't quite reach the fluent heights of last week. Alongside Keith in a second wicket partnership of 130 was Joe who took his early season good form to a new level with a splendid century, reached off only 112 balls. A pulled four brought up the landmark, a lovely stroke if not quite as aesthetically pleasing as the extra cover drive for six that brought up his half century; although Joe perished soon after, run out trying to increase an already healthy run rate, nothing could detract from an excellent afternoon's work from our gloveman. Well played Joe. The innings concluded with 20s from Ollie Stovell & Stephen Nunn as our total reached an imposing level, but on another excellent surface produced by groundsman Craig, there was still a doubt about whether it would be enough, at least until the opposition had had their turn.
Happily for us, Worlington's reply was unable to keep up with the asking rate and whilst that continued to climb, wickets also fell at reasonably frequent intervals. Calum McDonald opened from the top end and bowled an excellent spell, claiming two wickets for not many. His replacement from that end Matt Parker also grabbed a brace whilst Stephen broke the third wicket partnership during a tidy spell coming up the hill. Then, as he so often does, Keith came into the attack and nabbed three wickets, once again benefitting from the simple method of bowling straight. Jens Wair claimed the final wicket to fall and if there was one disappointment from the day, it was that we couldn't quite claim maximum bowling points as the last wicket pair saw off the threat of Jens & Tony Lee in the closing overs and Worlington finished on 173-9. Nevertheless, in the warm spring sunshine and with Fordham Heath looking particularly verdant, it was a well won victory to push the club upwards in the league table.
