Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Brockley on Sat 18 Jun 2022 at 12 noon
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
After last week’s poor showing the Green were hoping to bounce back against Brockley. Having lost the toss & Green were asked to bat. The innings got off to a dreadful start with Ollie Mewis being run out at the non-strikers end second over of the day and Joe Young soon joined him back in the pavilion edging to slip for 7. That left the Green wobbling at 12-2. Deepak Rajpal & the returning Will Spicer steadied the ship adding 84 for the 3rd wicket. Unfortunately after a brief rain delay Deepak fell just short of his half century. That brought the skipper to the crease with him & Will plundering 141 off just 19 overs. Will was finally caught at long on for a very well made 92. After that the Green regularly lost wickets as we looked to end the innings strong. Cameos from Tom Lee & Calum McD pushed the score to what looked like an excellent 292.
Once upon a time on the wicket at Fordham Heath, that total would be a guaranteed victory but not anymore. When the 3rd ball of Brockley reply was pulled for a massive 6, it was evident that the Green were still very much in a game and despite some decent bowling, the Brockley openers smashed 110 off the first 16 overs. Matt Parker finally got the breakthrough with Jeffery miscuing a short ball & Tom Lee taking a smart catch at square leg. However, the Green were still unable to control the flow of runs. A Nunn slower ball dismissed Fisher for a sparkling 97 but at that point Brockley were well in control of the chase. As the rain started to lash down, the Green were offered a lifeline as Spicer picked up two wickets 5 balls including the set McCaffrey but a few big blows by Lucas ensured that Brockley reached the target with 9 balls to spare.
So, another disappointing day for the Green despite the many positives. Next week doesn’t get any easier as we travel to league leaders Coggeshall.
