Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Haverhill II on Sat 23 Jul 2022 at 12 noon
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 67 runs
Match report
Fordham Heath once again looked magnificent, with a batting deck that you want to wrap up, put in your pocket and carry around so you can play on it every week. On this occasion we saw the Green pass 300 on our way to a comfortable 67 run victory over Haverhill.
Although we lost Ollie Mewis cheaply early-on, Deepak Rajpal batted as Deepak does, a mixture of defence and belligerence. Deepak had reached 45 whereupon a wild heave saw an inside edge crash into the pads and then unfortunately the stumps. Ah well, it was enjoyable while it lasted and gave us a solid base at 86-2. In came Will Spicer to join Keith Hammond and I for one, sat back expecting to watch a display of classic batting from both ends as the runs piled up. Sadly, for the first time this season Will not only failed to pass 50, but he didn't reach 20 before he too succumbed to a wild swing and heard the fatal death rattle. Thankfully for us, Keith produced another batting masterclass to finish unbeaten on 118, accelerating late on as he recorded 21 fours and a six in a virtual run-a-ball innings. He was ably supported by the middle order, with skipper Joe Young playing a similar innings to Deepak before he fell for 41. Though Ali Hammond's stay at the crease was all too brief, he was replaced by Ollie Stovell, who played his best innings of the season so far, as he pulled and cut to his heart's delight (and thumped a couple of maximums for good measure) on his way to an unbeaten 69 from just 40 balls. The unbroken partnership of 127 came in a little more than 11 overs and carried us through to an imposing final score of 304-5. I should add that I am indebted to their teammates for the description of that partnership as I was called away for a while and missed all the action - isn't that just typical that Ollie gets a score when I'm not around.
The Haverhill batters also enjoyed the conditions as despite our best efforts, we were denied maximum points as they batted through to reach 237-6 from their 45 overs. There were several decent contributions, but our visitors never threatened to overhaul the target. Leader of the attack Matt Parker bowled a tight opening spell coming from the top end and although he took a bit of tap when he returned for a second spell, at least those extra couple of overs did bring him a solitary wicket, which was the least his efforts deserved. Keith and Ollie S also claimed a wicket apiece whilst Will made up for that relative batting failure with three wickets with his off spin, which he seemed to enjoy immensely. The innings concluded with brief (and tidy) spells for both Ethan Frost and Dev Agrawal; it's good to see the youngsters getting the experience of being involved with the first team and contributing towards the win; as with all juniors making their way into first team cricket, they will get more chances to show what they can do in the future and we can look forward to seeing them become mainstays of the team in the years to come.
So that was it for another gloriously sunny afternoon at the Green; the early start meant we were all done and dusted before 630pm, giving us ample opportunity to imbibe cooling refreshments, as so perfectly demonstrated by our one and only El Presidente, who was on fine form himself today.
