Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Sunday T30 XI v Great Totham on Sun 11 Aug 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 68 runs
Match report
The Green slumped to a heavy 68 run defeat to Great Totham after what can best be described as a generally uninspiring and disappointing display.
Totham opted to bat after the coin toss and whilst neither opening bat exactly got after our bowlers, we did still manage to give them a large helping hand, delivering a succession of wides and no balls. All told, we coughed up 56 extras, against a mere 8 in our reply and therein lies the tale of the match - as our own players freely admitted, there was an awful lot of filth on offer which helped the visitors reach an imposing 256, bowled out with more than 3 overs in the bank. There were exceptions as Jens Wair picked up another 3-for, whilst Bevin Guthrie came on towards the tail end of the innings and showed the youngsters how it was done with a superb return of 5-23. If that doesn't convince Bev to come back next summer, I don't know what will.
Our efforts to chase down the target started brightly as Will Spicer reached 42 before being undone by the drinks break as he toe-ended an attempted pull to midwicket. Partner Richard Nunn had by then reached a half century (nice to see him get out of the 30's) and went on to make 79 before he perished as the required run rate was climbing rapidly. In truth, there wasn't a lot more to report on our innings other than the unfortunate run-out of Tim Chambers and the dismal dismissal of skipper Ollie Stovell, triggered by namesake Licence when on 21 - even the Totham players were incredulous when the almost apologetic LBW appeal was upheld. Such if life, I'm sure it won't have any bearing on future team selections! We reached 188-7 as time ran out on our innings, but at least things ended positively as Matt Murray's stint at umpiring-avoidance resulted in a damned fine BBQ; thanks Matt.
