Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Sunday T30 XI v Sudbury on Sun 28 Jul 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 76 runs
Match report
Sudbury came to Fordham Heath with a perfect winning record, but left several hours later having suffered a resounding defeat after a simply splendid all-round performance by the Green. Once again Ollie Stovell led from the front with a top score of 89, but four wickets for Jens Wair and three for Kevin Iliffe speak of a team effort that humbled our esteemed visitors.
Ollie had won the toss and chose to bat in the hope of avoiding having to chase 300+ as with our visit to Sudbury earlier in the season. After losing the experienced pair of Tim Chambers and Alex Hammond cheaply, our skipper joined opener James Plummer in steadying the ship. James played several delightful cover drives before misjudging the length of his final delivery to offer a return catch to the bowler; he had made 22 and seemed to thoroughly enjoy his time in the middle. A short while later we suffered the indignity of losing three wickets in an over to slump for 90-6 and the chances of posting a challenging total seemed low. However, Christian Martin came in to biff the ball around (he didn't seem to like the idea of running) until he too fell on 22 after a partnership of 48 with Ollie, who by now was flowing gracefully towards another big score. Although the final three wickets fell in quick succession, we ultimately posted a perfectly respectable 179 all out.
Sudbury's reply started for us with the pleasant surprise of the early wicket of their big-scoring captain and before long eyes were being well and truly rubbed at a scoreboard that read 36-6. The opening bowling partnership was simply irresistible, with Jens claiming 4-34 and Kevin 3-26 as they ripped the heart out of the batting line up of the league leaders. There was no way back from that as Matt Murray and Christian denied the lower order any scoring opportunities, while Jens then claimed a run-out after a mix-up in calling. Finally, Alex remembered what it was like to turn over his arm and claimed a brace to close the innings with the total on just 103, thereby securing a 76 run victory for the Green.
A word of thanks too to Anna Collins who alleviated potential boredom by scoring on the play-cricket app; sorry T-Roy, but you have been usurped by your younger sibling, even if Anna's shy demeanour means her banter is yet to reach your levels!
