Nacton v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 20 Jul 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report This was so much more than a one man show, but there's no getting away from the fact that Jamie Murray made a huge impact on today's proceedings; Jamie scored a superb unbeaten century to lead the Green to a highly impressive eight-wicket victory at promotion rivals Nacton.
Nacton were invited to bat on a track with a strong green tinge and with overhead conditions to suit the seamers; it was most definitely a good toss for captain Keith Hammond to win. Nevertheless, the Nacton openers initially resisted all that Oli Firmin and Jonathan Purser had to offer, with 46 on the board before JP struck. JP's long opening spell of ten overs (well, long for him!) brought further reward and his figures of 2-31 properly reflected an excellent spell, while Oli was rewarded with just a single scalp this week. Nacton picked up the scoring rate in the latter stages of their innings, but in the process offered a number of chances; while several went begging, five further wickets fell, with one each for Keith and Ollie Stovell and three more for Alastair Woodcock taking what for him must seem to be a rare trip away from Fordham Heath these days. There may well have been another wicket to add to the tally, a run out claimed by Joe Young with a direct hit from the boundary, but the umpire was unfortunately not as quick as Joe and unable to get in a position to give the decision.
One other point worth noting about the Nacton innings is that it was a pleasure to sit amongst their players during the innings, which is not something that I'm always able to say, sadly; they seem like a genuinely decent bunch of blokes and kept me entertained throughout with excellent banter, mostly directed at each other, although who could argue with the suggestion that Jamie's enthusiasm behind the stumps ought to mean that he is sponsored by SuperMario.
A target of 189 to win from 40 overs (agreed at the start of the match due to the rain that was threatened and appeared, albeit briefly) on a wicket that rewarded good bowling, looked as if it could be defendable unless our batsmen came to the fore. However, Jamie and Stuart Hammond took the attack to the bowlers from the off and even though the latter fell cheaply, the positive approach really seemed to demoralise our hosts and quite quickly too. Jamie reached 50 from just 31 balls with 8 fours and a six, having been joined by Keith, who was quite content to farm the strike and pick off the odd bad ball. Jamie's exhibition of power and placement continued at the same pace as he reached his ton from just 64 balls; his eventual 117* contained 11 fours and 5 maximums and was a joy to watch. Meanwhile Keith had calmly moved to 48 in a partnership of 128 when he was unfortunately run out by a direct hit. Fortunately, we had another Hammond to replace the skipper and Ali, during his brief innings, was there to hit the winning runs with the best part of 10 overs to spare.

Jamie Murray MOM

There wasn't much doubting the Colchester Brewery Man of the Match this Saturday as Jamie Murray (literally) smashed an unbeaten 117 to beat promotion rivals Nacton with 10 overs to spare. Jamie is pictured with The League's Best Scorer - David Stovell. Unfortunately El Presidente forgot to bring the Colchester Brewery beer so Jamie had to make do with a distinctly inferior substitute.

Simpsons Sky

There was a real 'Simpsons* Sky' at Nacton for the crunch promotion game this Saturday. * Cartoon programme on the Television, Tim.
