Ipswich III v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 25 Apr 2015 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 96 runs
Match report
On a wet morning The Green’s TC 1st XI headed over to Ipswich buoyed by the returning and now married Oliver Firmin and his Best Man Keith Hammond. Also the news of Jens’ recovery making rapid progress also gave us some energy going into the game. This was also probably the strongest team we have fielded in recent years. Confidence was high.
On what would be an ideal morning to win the toss and play to the Green’s bowling strengths, of course we lost and were put into bat. With Ipswich 2XI game being cancelled they of course dropped a few players down to boost their team but we weren’t concerned.
Opening the batting S Nunn and K Hammond made a cultured and steady start in difficult conditions playing both a spin and seam attack very well. As the green progressed into the early 60’s K Hammond fell unfortunately mistiming a short ball to the keeper just as he was looking to get set for a big score. S Nunn continued his good work rattling up to 47 before he fell slapping to point. A couple of quick wickets fell before drinks and the green went from 60-0 to 90-4. Rebuilding was needed.
This task fell down to Skipper A Hammond and Nipuna Ukwatte. Both batted supremely well, offering very few chances to the fielding side and set the Green up to 170-4 with 8 overs left in the bank when A Hammond fell. Goodall was then sent to the crease to try and accelerate the innings and knocked a quick-fire 20 and Nipuna brought up his 50 in a partnership of 40 odd in 4 overs. This propelled the green to 224-6. The Green’s specialist finisher O Firmin came in with a couple of overs left and scored a solid red inker of 2 not out. The Green finished up on 233-7. A great total given the early morning conditions.
After Tea the green raced into a phenomenal start, taking a wicket with the second ball and took 3 early wickets for very few runs - much the same as last week. In came number 4 playing his first game for the club poached from Felixstowe and touted as a 1st XI player. Through a number of missed chances, dodgey umpiring decisions he made a solid 77 before the combination of Goodall and Hammond managed to run out his partner which turned the innings on its head.
As light was falling it was down S Nunn (who took the prize wicket) and Tom Aston to clean up the tail and wrap up a 96 run victory. A good victory given the circumstances and again another learning curve for all involved. There were some contenders for man of the match K Hammond and S Nunn for their opening stand, M Goodall for his tight opening spell of bowling but it has to go to N Ukwatte for his batting in the middle order and rebuilding the innings, where the green have had a tendency to collapse this never looked like an option.
We’re home to Mersea next week another big game. A lot still to be improved on but 40 points from 40 is a fantastic start to the season. As usual good luck to the 2nd XI taking on Mersea on Bank Holiday Monday. All support over the weekend will be greatly appreciated.
