Eight Ash Green Cricket Club North Essex 1st XI (Sunday) v Two Counties Seniors on Thu 01 Jul 2021 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
The annual visit of the young men of the two counties produced an entertaining match that resulted in victory for the team with an ever so slightly lower average age.
As always seems to be the case, our visitors won the toss (surely they must have a double-headed coin) and elected to bat. There were contributions all down the order, but no big scores as the Two Counties were restricted to 180-7 in their 45 overs. Honourable mentions to youngsters Nitya Patel & Connor Murphy who both delivered tidy spells and claimed a wicket apiece bowling up the hill. Luke Coppin also grabbed one during his brief spell whilst first teamers Jens Wair, Joe Young & Ollie Stovell shared four between them. Not sure why James Plummer wasn't used - perhaps his fearsome pace was deemed too threatening? T-Roy Collins was unfortunately wicketless in 10 overs, so as we used 12 players I thought I would save his blushes and leave him as AN Other in the scorebook. It was either that or leave out Neil Brinded and I couldn't do that to our twinkle-toed wicketkeeper.
In our reply captain Richard Polley got over his confusion as to which side he should be playing for and shared an opening stand with Tom Lee that was threatening to take us all the way until the skipper decided to let someone else have a bat by giving his wicket away. Tom went on to demonstrate his growing maturity with the bat in reaching 50 and after a little flurry of wickets it was Ollie, with a composed 62, latterly in partnership with Sam Collins, who took us to the edge of victory, although Sam had the pleasure of hitting the winning runs.
As has become tradition of late, the match ended with a fish supper and some splendid ale from Colchester Brewery. With the sun shining for much of the day what more could one ask ask for?
