Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) v Harwich & D. II on Sat 24 Apr 2021 at 12 noon
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 44 runs
Match report
On a sunny day at the Heath, an excellent team performance saw the Green comfortably beat nine-man Harwich & Dovercourt in our fist match of the season. Surprisingly put into bat, Green openers Luke Keeble and Tom Lee made the most of it and the score rattled along to 114-0 until Luke was out exhausted with 70 to his name. Tim Chambers joined Tom and saw him to his 50. The scoring rate slowed when Tom was out for 54 but a confident 17 not out from Jack Axon and a mighty six from Tony Lee took us to an above-par 230 for 6 off 40 overs.
Apart from a brief few overs when they put bat to ball with intent, H&D were never really in the running. The Green sportingly gave them a chance by dropping as many chances as we could, but in the end 230 was too much for Harwich and they fell about 44 short (the scorebook is rather hazy on the detail). To say it was the first game of the season, all the bowlers did well. Nitya Patel was by the far the most economical and Luke Coppin impressed with his left arm spin in his first game. Jack Smith (3-39) was perhaps the pick of the bowlers. The fielding was excellent when the ball was on the ground, less excellent when it was in the air.
Man of the match: technically Luke Keeble for thumping 70 to set us on our way to a winning total, or Matt Murray for captaining astutely and taking the key wicket of their skipper. But the real star of the show was the new scoreboard which performed flawlessly throughout. Well done Ajula and Thanuja!
Overall this was an excellent start to the season. We have 15 points and a good team spirit to take into our game at Ipswich IIs next week. Special thanks to Mick and Craig for getting the ground and wicket in such a good condition after a very wet winter and drought conditions for the last few weeks.
