Brockley v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 22 May 2021 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 69 runs

Match report The Green slumped to a heavy defeat on another cold, grey and rather miserable day for playing cricket. Brockley may be sited in a picturesque part of Suffolk and the home team were a decent bunch of lads, but we went there to win and left empty-handed.
Joe won the toss and invited Brockley to bat on a pitch with damp patches just back of a length. Unfortunately, we didn't threaten the batsmen with sufficient regularity to build pressure as the openers built a 98 run partnership. Jens finally made the breakthrough with the first of his two wickets; he also claimed a run-out as our star performer in the field, but we were guilty of several miss-fields and spilt multiple catches in an otherwise rather disappointing effort. A late wicket apiece for Jack and Ethan, together with another run-out (Matt & Joe share the credit) at least allowed us to pick up a couple more bowling points as the innings closed at 198-6.
What we needed in reply was a solid start; what we got was anything but. Deepak set the tone with an expansive drive at the first ball of the innings which squirted off his inside edge; he didn't last much longer, nor did Tom, Jack or Ollie as the opening bowlers strangled the life out of our batting and we slumped to 27-4 after 14 overs. That left a major rebuilding job for the rest of the batting order but it always looked like a challenge that was beyond us. Joe top-scored with 37 as he valiantly tried to hold-together the middle order but we couldn't build the big partnership needed. JP did a JP - two thumping shots for a maximum promised much, but then he fell to a tame dab at the ball. Jens came in next and fought manfully, but couldn't push on against more tight bowling. A cameo from Tony was fun while it lasted (he also launched one over the ropes) - this was a 'good Tony' day when he's great to be around and doesn't want to fight the world. That left Calum to show some promise of future run-scoring as he joined Jens in our final partnership that earned a couple of batting points, but the result had long-since been known.
Roll-on sunny afternoons when I can leave my coat at home and grab my panama rather than a pair of gloves.
