Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 118 runs

Match report Nobody is sure if Eight Ash Green 2s have ever been promoted before, but the uncertainty is over after a fantastic win (the tenth in a row) against Witham 3s.

The Green fielded a strong side but hearts’ sank when Witham won the toss and elected to bowl in conditions that were only going to improve. It was to prove the only thing they won that day as Richard Polley and Calum McDonald batted sensibly to see off the new ball. The scoring rate was good on a pitch with a lot of bounce and Jonathan Purser and Jens Wairaccelerated in the final session with aggressive batting and running. JP ended up 80 not out and The Green a respectable 207.

Witham started well and punished anything short but skipper RP judiciously brought on Bevin Guthrie to tighten things up. Momentum quickly switched to The Green courtesy of two outstanding catches at deep mid on from Troy Collins. Others followed his example and every catch was held to ensure victory with overs to spare. Witham had no complaints with the result other than having to play at Harwich again next season.

It was a good game played in great spirit and fitting farewell to Colchester Brewery Man of Match Bevin. (See you back next season Bev!) The 2s look forward to playing in a higher league next season with a winning combination of youth and experience. Let’s hope our 1s can do the same next Saturday.

Club legend Bevin Guthrie won the Colchester Brewery Man of the Match on Saturday with 5 wickets to help secure promotion with a 118 run victory over Witham 3s. Bev gets his bottle of Metropolis from BBC Essex's Sports Supremo Victoria Polley.
