Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Tuddenham on Sat 14 Sep 2019 at 12:30
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
The promotion dream is over for another season. We came oh so close and yet ultimately fell agonisingly short, losing to a fine Tuddenham side in the last over by the margin of 5 wickets. It was a tremendous game of cricket where each side had periods of dominance, but for the Green it wasn’t to be. Of course, when one tries to analyse the moments that could have turned the result our way, some players will try to find reasons to chastise themselves, but they absolutely should not do that. We win as a team, we lose as a team and if things didn’t go the way that we desired, no individual will have a finger pointed at them. You’ve had a great season chaps, after a tough start where several results went against us, and should be proud of your efforts over the last five months.
Back when the sun was still offering warmth, Tuddenham won the toss and invited us to bat; Keith would have done the same had he had the choice. James Parker & Stuart Hammond saw off the new ball, but the bowlers offered very few freebies so they kept the scoring rate in check; they fell for 41 and 36 respectively, each attempting to increase the rate, but unfortunately being unable to do so. Keith and Ali Hammond then took up the mantle, but we lost both in their 20’s in the pursuit of quick runs as the equation became ever more complicated – do we chase a bigger score at the potential expense of losing more wickets and giving them additional bowling points? That was a tough quandary to consider, unless you’re Ollie Mewis who cracked a splendid 50 from 36 balls, including two maximums as he batted in his own inimitable style. We eventually reached 228-6 and while that was never considered to be beyond Tuddenham’s reach, we also felt that we could defend it if things went our way.
Tuddenham’s pursuit of glory started in a rush despite a fine spell from Drew Woodhouse in particular. He claimed the wicket of one of the openers, but the other (Lack) was heading imperiously towards a match winning century before a moment of brilliance in the field brought us back into the game. For the second time this season he was run out by Keith, but this time he had laid the foundation for a Tuddenham victory with 74. From a fielding perspective, Ollie M followed suit with a direct-hit run-out and as Stephen Nunn rattled the timbers of two more batsmen during a consistently threatening spell, Tuddenham had slumped from 114-1 to 160-5 and our victory chances seemed high. Sadly, it was not to be as leg spinner Shimmens came in at 7 and played the situation with stunning calm and a mixture of finesse and belligerence to strike an unbeaten 42 from 34 balls and lead the visitors to victory. Well played Tuddenham and congratulations on your promotion.
So, it’s back to Division 4 next season for us, where we will gird our loins and make another attempt to scale the summit. Rest well over the winter Greenies and we can look forward to what 2020 brings.
