Match report Another Hammond show led the Green to a comfortable 9 wicket victory over bottom of the table Elmstead. Keith starred with ball and bat, whilst Stuart was imperious in dismissing the opposition bowlers, such that the match was over not long after 6pm, which is an extremely early finish for us!
Perhaps the only disappointment was not claiming full bonus points as Elmstead batted through to reach 166-7, largely thanks to a stoic 83 from opener Prestney. We had to wait to the mid point of the innings before Keith claimed the first of his three wickets, but with opponents determined not to give anything away, we generally found it difficult to prise them out. Oli Firmin & Stephen Nunn each claimed one scalp, whilst Drew Woodhouse took two with his leggies, which was two more than he'd been able to bag in his opening spell of fast bowling. Drew will also be remembered for a superb balletic leap and one-handed catch on the boundary at deep backward square leg; it's fair to say that we are unlikely to see a better catch than that all season.
The reply was delivered at a cracking pace as we knocked off the runs with more than 17 overs to spare. Elmstead must be sick of the sight of Stuart & Keith batting together - they shared a partnership of 212 when we first met back in June and today it was unbroken at 131 when victory was achieved. The bowling may have been less challenging than some attacks that we have faced, but you still have to put away the bad ball and in Stuart (85*) & Keith (68*) we have expert proponents of that art; both appeared effortless in stroking the ball to the boundary, with a touch of belligerence applied when necessary.
With the second team claiming another victory today, the dream of both sides claiming a prized promotion spot remains alive. Come on the Green.
