Mildenhall III v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 25 May 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
To all those who saw the batsman-friendly wicket at Mildenhall and questioned Keith's sanity when he won the toss and invited the home team to bat, who's laughing now? Keith backed our batsmen to chase down anything Mildenhall set us (which happened to be the not insubstantial target of 235) and despite limited contributions from a trio of Hammonds at the top of the order, we eventually secured victory by 7 wickets with more than four overs in hand. That we did win quite comfortably was largely due to a pair of Ollies, Stovell and Mewis, whose superb unbroken partnership of 169 saw us home.
But let's go back to where it all began and the early signs were not good. JP came up the hill from the river end, but his spell was all too brief as even several decent balls found their way to the boundary. Meanwhile, from the top end our Mr Reliable Oli Firmin had no ball problems and before we knew it Mildenhall had reached 44-0 after 4 overs. Keith brought himself on to steady the ship, while Oli started to find a measure of control, although it was still somewhat of a surprise when he broke the opening stand at 80. Unlike last week's feast of wickets, this proved to be Oli's only entry in the book. Ollie Stovell then came on to tie-up an end with something purporting to be off spin, but he did a job for the skipper and took a wicket with a rare flighted delivery, credit to Alex Hammond who steadied himself under a steepler to cling on gratefully. Even Stuart Hammond got a bowl this week and he snared our third and final wicket, again a skier, well taken by Ollie S. Some late acceleration enabled Mildenhall to reach 234-3, but with a lengthy batting line-up, we were confident of winning the chase.
That confidence was dented when Keith's serene start abruptly came to an end, while Alex never got going this week. Stuart was getting into his stride, despite a troublesome hamstring, so when he ran himself out for a run-a-ball 37 we were still a long way from the winning line at 66-3. Enter the Ollies to play remarkably similar unbeaten innings: both faced 90 balls, both hit 12 boundaries and one maximum and both played some delightful cover drives, together with the odd belligerent pull shot. The final scorecard shows Stovell 84* and Mewis 82*, although the latter will swear that the winning two leg byes actually came off the bat (and yes, for the third time this season Ollie M was there to see us home). I should add that the Ollies also intelligently played to the field and kept the board ticking over, never fretting if the bowlers put together a few dot balls, knowing that the runs would come. And they did, and we won, making the long journey home from Suffolk a very pleasant one.
