Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Nacton on Sat 04 May 2019 at 12:30
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 12 runs
Match report
Whatever happened to fortress Fordham Heath? Two matches played here this season and we've lost them both. Yes, this was close again, but I didn't really want to sit through the second ice age getting frostbitten fingers to see another defeat.
Having inserted Nacton we saw them reach 175-7 from their 36 overs, the match being reduced in acknowledgement of the regular squally showers that visited the Heath this afternoon. The innings was anchored by opener John Warner who hit a composed unbeaten 85; arguably, as he was the only player to bat through on either side, his acceleration after a slow start became the difference between the teams. On the plus side for the Green was an excellent spell from left arm opener Ben Ashton, who picked up 3-37 from his 12 overs. Ollie Mewis also got his name in the wickets column (1-32) and had a run-out to his credit, whilst a late-innings cameo from Ollie Stovell brought him a brace (2-19).
In reply, our pinch-hitting experiment didn't come off quite as planned as the openers were kept in check by some accurate bowling and then, as the required run rate climbed, no-one was able to go on to make a major contribution, the top score being Alex Hammond's 28, despite the top six all reaching double figures. It has to be said that Nacton's fielding was better than ours on the day, as we spilled at least two comfortable catches, whilst they were able to turn far more singles into twos than we were. The batsmen never gave up trying and wickets were sacrificed in the pursuit of quick runs as our innings reached its denouement, but for Nacton their ultimate winning margin was 12 runs.
