Match report
EAG v West Mersea
The non availability of a number of regular 1st teamers, left the Green under strength when visiting West Mersea on Sunday. A further complication before the start saw 12 year old Richard Nunn drafted in to complete the 11. An excellent start saw Steely and Ric reduce Mersea to 32 for 3, before Mersea recovered to 99 before losing their 4th wicket. Good spells followed, 10 overs straight through by Jim Crafford, who was unlucky to remain wicketless, and Nick Murray who returned 3 -45 off his 10 overs. Mersea were dismissed in the last over for 221 with Stephen Nunn running out their last batsman, to cap a fine fielding display by the youngsters, Stephen, brother Richard, and Matthew Chambers.
The batting line up was not the strongest, a steady start helped lay a foundation, Richard Polley and Tim Chambers taking the score to 59 for the 1st wicket. Jim Crafford and Ric Olejnik hit 33 and 24 respectively to leave the Green needing 10 an over off the last 10, possible but unfortunately Ric was out to a superb boundary catch and the chase was off. The experienced Nick Murray with his inexperienced partner Matt Chambers took the Green to maximum batting points with some sensible batting. We shouldn’t be pleased with a defeat, but the 10 points gained was the result of a very good team performance when the odds were stacked against us.
