Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) v Witham III on Sat 25 Apr 2015 at 12:30
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 11 runs
Match report
EAG 2nd XI opened their season on Saturday with a win in a highly entertaining game. Batting first, the first runs of the season came from Alex Johnson’s straight six in the second over. Steady progress followed from the top order until the arrival of skipper Luke Keeble coming in at 5 with the score on 73, he unleashed a flurry of big hits in reaching a quick fire hundred in the last over. Luke’s first century for the club contained 11 x 4’s and 5x 6’s and helped the Green reach a respectable total of 223.
Witham’s very handy openers put on 125 for the first wicket before Will Spicer broke the partnership with a smart caught and bowled. The introduction of Andrew Woodhouse’s leg spin saw further wickets fall and Witham fell behind the run rate. This pressure produced run outs, with Jamie Murray’s direct hit being the pick of these. Needing 17 off 2 overs Matt Parker bowled the 44th over tightly and Alex Johnson followed this by dismissing the final Witham batsman to give the Green victory by 11runs.
A terrific team performance by the Green, in front of one of the biggest Division 8 crowds seen at the Green, a particular triumph for Luke is his first game as skipper. There were also great bowling performances by Alex, Matt, and Andrew Woodhouse with 4 wickets. Good fielding by the youthful team who would have been inspired by the not so young Tony Lee and Paul Johnson who fielded excellently.
Finally a special mention to Will Spicer and Calum McDonald making their senior cricket debuts, both batted and bowled well and the rest of side were quick to acknowledge afterwards their part in the close fought victory.
