Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Melton St Audry's on Sat 18 Apr 2015 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
On a warm April afternoon the Eight Ash Green TC 1st XI started their Division 6 Campaign with a tough fixture against a Melton St Audrey’s side who just missed out on promotion last season, finishing 4th in the same division.
Returning skipper Alastair Hammond winning the toss opted to bowl first on a green top wicket and what a decision that turned out to be. With a certain Oliver Firmin tying the knot it was up to Jack Smith and Mark Goodall to share the new ball. In a devastating opening spell, the Green reduced Melton to 3-3 from 3 overs. Our season was truly up and running.
The Melton middle order were not going to just lay down and concede their wickets, they had other ideas. With the combination of luck, an electric outfield and some unsuccessful bowling changes Melton staged a fightback and finished on 224 all out in 44.3 overs. Hammond rolled back the years bowling a heavy ball and finishing with figures of 2-51 from 12, Goodall finished with 2-41 from 11 and Jack Smith finished with 4-45 off of 13. The first Objective was complete 5 Bowling Points.
After tea Stephen Nunn and Ollie Lovejoy came out to bat on a wicket that had dried sufficiently to turn into a batting dream for April. The outfield was electric and the two openers raced to 60 without loss before S Nunn holed out to deep backward square leg. This brought Green debutant Ed Lambert-Clark to the crease. Lambert-Clark and Lovejoy played fluidly to take the Green to 160-1 before Lovejoy was out to a leading edge for 60. A typically crisp knock as we have come to expect from this young talent. Lambert-Clark followed a couple of overs later for 62. A cracking debut innings combining some almighty blows with timed and elegant bounds. 46 of Lambert-Clark’s 62 were boundaries containing 10 fours and 1 6.
The innings was guided home by a typically resilient and defiant 32 not out from Joe Young after a couple of quick wickets fell and a nice little 12 not out for Nipuna Ukwatte. The Green chased the 225 in 35 overs.
A cracking start to the season and the win was dedicated to Jens Wair who is battling away to recovery in Adenbrookes Hospital.
There were some good contenders for man of the match but it has to go to Ed Lambert-Clark for his debut 62 that set us well on the way to 225. When we are next at home – the jug is on you sir!
We move on to Ipswich next week with a strong side buoyed with the news of Jens’ recovery and with a good solid victory under our belts.
Finally Good Luck to the 2nd XI captained by Luke Keeble for the first time in their home fixture against Witham 3rd XI.
