Earls Colne v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Sunday T30 XI on Sun 07 Sep 2014 at 12:30pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 11 runs
Match report
The Green travelled to Earls Colne for the penultimate game of the season hoping to keep their faint hopes of promotion alive. On an overcast day the toss was vitally important which obviously meant that Captain Marston lost with the Green unsurprisingly being asked to bat. On a slow wicket and even slower outfield the top order struggled, Joe Young digging in with his 22 coming off 21 overs. Alex Hammond gave the innings some much needed impetus with a breezy 23 but wickets continued to fall and when Matt Norris departed the Green were in deep trouble at 97-8. However the last 2 wickets led by Jens Wair (27*) put on 47 as the Green ended up on 146-9 and had at least given themselves something to defend.
The tea break also saw the introduction of the sun with batting conditions improving as Earls Colne’s openers walked to the wicket. Despite tight opening spells from Richard Nunn and Jack Smith the Colne batsman looked comfortable and it took a moment of brilliance for the Green to make the breakthrough. Steeman looked to smash Smith back down the ground but Norris peddling back from mid-off grasped the ball one handed over his head and somehow managed to hold on as he crashed down to earth. It was the inspiration the Green needed and from then on they started to take control. Charlie, Jens and Matt Murray followed the good work of the opening bowlers with Charlie producing the ball of the day nipping one back through Patel’s gate to take his middle stump. 3 wickets at the end from Stephen Nunn ensured that Earls Colne needed 17 off the final over which Richard easily defended. Overall it was a brilliant effort in the field as the Green recorded their 8th win of the season.
