Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Sunday T30 XI v Great Braxted on Sun 17 Apr 2011 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost By 13 runs
Match report
Eight Ash Green’s first game of the season was a disappointing one, which saw them lose narrowly to Great Braxted by 13 runs.
Tom Aston won the toss and put the opposition into bat. Green’s opening bowlers Nipuna Ukwatte and Giorgio D’Anna bowled superbly; quickly dismissing Great Braxted’s opening batsmen who were both caught behind by Kevin Smith. A mixture of good batting and sloppy fielding saw Great Braxted’s middle order get 150 runs between them. Hale top scored with 68 before he was caught with a good catch by Jens Wair off of the bowling of Matt Norris. Tom Aston and Stephen Nunn bowled very well, each picking up a wicket. Stephen seems to have gained a yard of pace since last season and this was shown with a delivery that nearly put a hole through wicket keeper Kevin Smith! Great Braxted were taking risky runs which eventually resulted in two run outs. Adrian Sampson and Kevin Smith combined well for the first run out then Will Shearman and Nipuna Ukwatte combined for an easy second run out. Eight Ash Green’s excellent fielding at the start was undone by poor concentration late on and 31 extras helped Great Braxted post a final score of 200.
Tom Aston and new overseas player Will Shearman, from New Zealand, opened the batting for Eight Ash Green. The opening pair played well, quickly making a 50 run partnership before captain Tom Aston was caught for 21 runs thanks to a few boundaries and a pavilion damaging 6! Debutant Will Shearman was caught shortly after, in controversial fashion for 44, off of a full toss which was deemed a legal delivery by the umpire. Nipuna Ukwatte came in at number 3 and made 17 before he too was caught. Paul Marston made 24 and was supported by Adrian Sampson who scored 10 runs. Kevin Smith played in his attacking style, causing Great Braxted to set a very defensive field with players dotted all around the boundary and he was eventually caught in the deep for a useful 28. The required run rate was increasing which forced Stephen Nunn to play aggressively and also saw big hitter Tony Lee put up the order in an attempt to find more boundaries which were now hard to come by. Tony looked for the big shot early on and was unfortunate to top edge the ball to the keeper. Matt Norris then joined Stephen at the crease and despite some excellent running the run rate was still high which soon caused Stephen to be bowled looking to hit a big shot, making 15 runs. Jens Wair also needed to play aggressively and was bowled for just 1. Matt and Giorgio ran hard but could not find the boundaries, forcing Giorgio to improvise in the final over. An attempted reverse sweep was not quite executed successfully and Giorgio was bowled for 2, leaving Matt on 11 not out and Eight Ash Green 13 runs short of Great Braxted’s 200.
