Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) v Kelvedon & Feering CC III on Sat 24 May 2025 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
To put a spin on a well known phrase, it was a game of four quarters as EAG 2s took on Kelvedon 3s this week.
Before the game, Keveldon won the toss and surprised us by electing to bat after a downpour in the morning causing the pitch to be a bit damp in places.
This seemed to be a poor decision as Purser (3-19) and Murray (1-31) opened the bowling and tied the keveldon batting line up down. After some bowling changes bringing Amos (0-13) and Coppin (4-31) into the game early Kelvedon were 48-5 at drinks, unable to score and losing wickets fast they looked like they could be in big trouble.
The second 20 started the same with Coppin picking up his third wicket, Frost with good work to force a run out, followed by Murray with his first at 78-8 it seemed like job done. This 8th wicket a fantastic catch from Collins (his 5th of the season) a reaction catch in close catching a well struck drive. Everything was looking good.
However, the momentum of the match then went the way of Keveldon, thanks to some sub par feilding in places by the green but some good batting from their youngsters. A 9th wicket partnership of 63 put their score up to 144-9, with spells from Wair (0-39) and Patel (0-22) struggling to get breakthrough.
It is worth noting with all the EAG bowling figures there were a total of 11 dropped catches, some harder than others, and so all figures can be taken with a pinch if salt. Some of the bowling was a higher standard than it may seem.
Coppin broke this partnership being brought back on at the end, with a solid catch from Wair, but a flourish for the 10th wicket pair made Kelvedon finish on 162-9.
Disappointed not to get full bowling points and to be chasing about 70 more than we thought we would at one stage, Kelvedon were the happier side at drinks.
The third quarter also went to Kelvedon, although what seemed like a strong opening partnership from Purser (12) and Frost (37) looked like it was wresting back the game in our favour, 3 quick wickets fell as Purser, Patel (0) and Bradbury (0) all fell within 3 overs. At 50-3 keveldon had made inroads into our batting line up.
A partnership of 22 settled us a bit as Dormant (25) joined Frost at the crease but this was broken soon after as Frost hit a ball in the air and was caught at mid off. 72-4.
Collins (10) added a swift 16 with Dormant before falling to a catch at point and Dormant then fell soon after leaving the score 96-6 at drinks. It seems quarter 3 also went to Kelvedon.
However, quarter 4, the decisive one, was won by eight ash green thanks to fantastic batting displays from Amos (32*) and Wair (30*). Their brand of attacking shots and agressive running put on an unbroken 66 together, as we crossed the line 6 down with just under 30 overs bowled.
What looks like a convincing win on paper was anything but that in reality, and we're very happy to he taking home a well fought 19 points.
POTM - There were 2 performances in our bowling innings that deserve a shout out. Coppin again with 4 wickets but Purser with 11 overs 3-19 was pick of the bowlers.
However, player of the match this week goes to a batsman. The game was still in the balance at 96-6 when Amos and Wair arrived at the crease together, but after taking back the momentum from Kelvedon they put the game to bed. PoTM could have been either of the 2 but this week goes to Amos for only his second second 11 innings, a match winning 32*.
