Sudbury v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club North Essex 1st XI (Sunday) on Sun 26 May 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 147 runs

Match report Our welcome to Sunday cricket 2019 came with a 147 run loss and the all too familiar tale of chasing leather here, there and everywhere. However, the size of the defeat doesn't give the complete picture; Sudbury are new to this league but will not be here for long - they are clearly going to be far too good for all comers. Also, our aim is to give everyone, particularly the youth, a chance to shine, and that box was very much ticked today, with all 11 players making a contribution one way or another.
It was no surprise that Sudbury chose to bat having won the toss - their skipper & opening bat already had a big ton to his name this season and added another to the list with a classy display. That he got there was a tad surprising in that mid-way through the innings the showers became just too heavy to continue and a two-hour rain delay followed. On another day that may have meant curtains for the match, but our hosts were determined to be patient and re-start their innings and as the ground dried out they were able to do just that. Ultimately they posted 312-4, but honourable mentions must go to Craffords Jim & Ollie who each took a wicket, Jim's being his first for the Green in more years than he'd care to remember. He also snared two fine slip catches, the first during another splendid opening spell from Ethan Wyatt, whilst a returning Matt Chambers bowled with some menace to claim the other wicket to fall.
Given the option of going for it or trying to bat out 40 overs, skipper Ollie Stovell encouraged an attack-minded approach and his teammates did not fail in that regard. Sadly, most failed in terms of registering a big score, although Matt Chambers entertained us with some lusty blows on his way to a top score of 40. Only Ollie with 33 got past the teens and then he succumbed to that rare dismissal, in that he walked for an LBW appeal. One further mention is necessary - Duncan Wyatt may not have donned his whites today, but he delivered a splendid example of umpiring (if only all umpires smiled as much!), delighting those of us in the scorebox with his mannerisms and oh so clear calling.
We may have lost today, but let's take encouragement from all who played a part, and look forward to some successful afternoons as the season proceeds.
