Ipswich & East Suffolk v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 31 Jul 2021 at 12 noon
Match was Tied
Match report
I'm not sure how to describe the events of today, which saw a match within a match end in that most rare of results, a tie. It was entertaining fare that reached the last ball with all three results possible, but it still feels a little disappointing that we didn't get the win.
The first attempt at a match lasted barely two overs before the heavens opened and that match was declared null and void. At the time, Keith Hammond was extremely disappointed at losing his 6* from the record book, but with time to reflect, his personal efforts were later to look rather better.
But before we get to that we need to talk about the Ipswich & East Suffolk innings in the match that did happen about 90 minutes after the cloudburst. It was reduced to 25 overs a side and after being invited to bat by skipper Joe Young, our hosts were bowled out for 164 off the penultimate ball of the innings. Ollie Stovell performed rather well in claiming the bowling honours with 3-19 from his four overs (it's not often I'm so effusive in praise for my son in these match reports), while five others each claimed a wicket, those being Ethan Wyatt, Jonathan Purser, Keith, T-Roy Collins and Jens Wair. Fielding honours to Will Spicer for two run-outs, one a direct hit and one with help from Joe and a batsman who simply wafted his bat in the air. The innings had been a mixture of feast and famine really - lots of dot balls, but many more boundaries than we managed in reply, including one huge six that sailed over the pavilion and far too close to my car for my liking.
As with the aborted match, Keith opened with Deepak Rajpal, but this time their partnership was considerably longer. Both scored at around a run a ball and for much of the innings we were ahead of the comparative score, but ultimately we couldn't get over the line. The partnership reached a magnificent 157 before Deepak fell in the 24th over to a superb diving catch in the deep. Deepak will be the first to admit that he has batted more stylishly for 53 than he did at times today, but his efforts were crucial alongside Keith. Keith ended the day unbeaten on 92 and would also acknowledge he was not as fluent as he can be, but his class shone through as he came so close to leading us to victory. Unfortunately, a superbly delivered final over restricted us to just 5 runs, with two scrambled off the last ball to ensure we claimed the tie. It was a breathless ending that we could not have envisaged as the puddles grew in front of the pavilion earlier in the afternoon and although our thoughts were tinged with frustration at not claiming the victory, surely cricket was the winner?
