Great Bromley v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club PieRates XI on Wed 15 May 2019 at 6.00pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
For the first half an hour or so of this match everything was looking as bright as the early evening sunshine as Alex Hammond (35) and Matt Norris (41) put on an opening stand of 70, entertaining the crowd (at least 4 of us) with a mixture of power hitting and finesse. Unfortunately, when Alex was stumped, so it seemed were the rest of the batting order, as a potential 170 became a scramble to finish on 126-9, with only Tom Lee also managing to reach double figures.
The batting track was offering a little help to the bowlers with the odd ball keeping low or stopping in the pitch, but with a short boundary towards the pavilion our total always looked to be unlikely to provide Great Bromley with a real challenge. We opened with the dynamic duo of Calum McDonald (1-19) and T-Roy Collins (1-34) who mostly kept things tight, but then the home middle order found the generosity of our spinners too much to ignore and hurried Bromley towards the winning line. The last three wickets were really nothing more than a late blip, but were notable in that they came from somewhat surprising sources. The aforementioned Norris had a rare opportunity to show us that he can actually bowl too (1-12) while James Plummer (2-8) may well spend the next few days wondering how he picked up a brace of wickets, the batsmen certainly seemed rather surprised to hear the death rattle on each occasion.
So it was that Bromley strolled home with 5 wickets and more than 4 overs to spare and we ate all the pies before our chastened heroes headed off into the sunset.
