Match report In an entertaining encounter at Hare Field the Green came out an agonising 10 runs short of victory after the home team had posted an imposing 231-4.
Opener Addision led the way for Coggeshall with a fluent 93 before he skied one from Jens Wair that Alex Hammond expertly and gratefully clutched. While Addison was at the crease we were looking at a target in excess of 300, but credit to Alex the seam bowler (1-22 from 8) and Bevin Guthrie (0-33 from 9) who combined to slow the scoring rate and at least offer us a target that was potentially reachable. Alex had a good day in the field, claiming a run out with a direct hit, whilst Ollie Licence took the other wicket as reward for his perseverance.
Our reply began reasonably fluently as Tom Lee often took the aerial route on his way to 24, while Will Spicer displayed that composed elegance that can make him such a joy to watch until he fell on 38; perhaps he was still feeling the effects of being poleaxed by a ball that hit him where no man wants to be hit! (and yes, as always happens in such circumstances, his teammates were firstly overcome by mirth before feelings of sympathy kicked in). Despite the solid start, runs became hard to come by for a while and the asking rate was rising to very challenging amounts when skipper Ollie Stovell came to the crease. Ollie would be the first to admit that his eventual 84 not out was not his most fluent batting display, despite playing several delightful on-drives and using up only 69 balls, but he was visibly frustrated on a number of occasions as he was unable to add to his boundary count. The support of Bevin (a run-a-ball 19*), who extracted unexpected energy from his legs, kept us just about in with a shout, but our final total of 221-5 meant that we were ultimately to leave empty-handed.
