West Bergholt CC v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Sunday T30 XI on Sun 02 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 27 runs
Match report
Our first NECL win of the season was achieved at the expense of our near neighbours from Bergholt. The home side made a spirited fight of chasing down a near 200 target, but eventually ran out of wickets to enable the Green to win by 27 runs.
Skipper Ollie Stovell had no hesitation in opting to bat when he won the toss and although the opening bowlers kept things relatively tight, Kieth Hammond in particular looked in no trouble. I for one, sat back to enjoy another batting masterclass only for a surprising misjudgement to cut it short for a run-a-ball 26; perhaps impending events were taking greater precedence in Keith's mind, and who would blame him for that? A mini collapse followed and at 46-4 we needed Ollie and Sam Collins to rebuild, which they duly did in an 81 run partnership. Ollie fell for a well-constructed 51 just as he was looking to accelerate, but Sam continued to hold the innings together, finally falling for an invaluable 37. It was left to Jim Crafford to wield the willow in the closing overs, as he struck an unbeaten 38, to take us to 196-7, just short of maximum batting points.
We may have felt that the target was too big for the home team, but Bergholt began their reply quite confidently. The opening partnership was broken by T-Roy Collins as the batsman feathered a catch behind; all credit to Harvey Borges the batsman, who walked despite the uncertainty in the umpire's mind. Fantastic sportsmanship from the young man; something I'd love to see more of in our wonderful game. That proved to be the first of four wickets for T-Roy (4-27) and he took an excellent high catch in the outfield, so it was a good day all-round for the Collins clan. The fielding was generally of a good standard, with Connor Murphy worthy of a mention, not only for some enthusiastic ground fielding, but for taking an excellent catch of his own, one which removed the Bergholt top-scorer Smith who was threatening to take the game right down to the wire. That he couldn't help Bergholt secure victory was also in large part thanks to another of our young bowlers who took a four-for: Oli Crafford was rewarded for his efforts with 4-28, and whilst Ethan Wyatt only managed one wicket today (coming from the last ball of his stint), he was never short of threat to the batsmen. Ollie Stovell brought himself on towards the end and applied the coup de grace and our 2019 season could finally be said to be up and running.
