Worlington II v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 07 Sep 2019 at 12:30
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report With the greatest of respect to our hosts, this was about as easy a victory and 20-point haul as we could ever hope for. It allowed for an early finish and a dash back to the Green to join in the celebrations for the IIs and their splendid victory over Witham that enabled them to secure top spot in the league and promotion to Division 8 next season.
Back to Worlington for the tale of the game. Worlington batted first and were rolled over for a mere 116. In truth, from the depths of 39-6 they probably shouldn’t have even got close to a batting point, but it would be churlish in the extreme to lay any criticism on the bowlers. The opening pair claimed 7 wickets between them, with Oli Firmin taking 4-37 from another 15 over spell, while the younger Drew Woodhouse only managed 10 overs, but claimed 3-25. Top effort chaps, lots of fire and threat to the batsmen, which was well supported in the field, with almost all chances taken and one particular catch from Ollie Stovell was a spectacular example of slip-fielding as he dived low to his right to take it one-handed. Not wanting to be left out of the action, brothers Keith & Alex Hammond came on to mop up the tail, the former winning the battle of sibling rivals by a margin of two wickets to one.
In theory we had 58 overs to reach our victory target, but we needed fewer than 18 of them to wrap-up a 9-wicket victory. It was a significant surprise that Worlington even claimed a single wicket, achieved when we were only 13 runs from victory and in a manner that left many shaking their heads in amazement. Looking more than ever like the Green’s version of Steve Smith (only far more aesthetically pleasing), Stuart Hammond had reached 43 before he toe-ended an attempted pull and was caught at midwicket. I didn’t think Stuart was capable of such mundane strokes, but perhaps we can allow him one for the season! His partner Ollie Mewis had no such difficulty in find the middle of his bat. He also found the boundary with monotonous regularity, his half century arriving from just 41 balls, reached in an over where five consecutive deliveries crossed the boundary. Ollie finished unbeaten on 61, ending the match with another brace of boundaries; he really rather enjoyed the buffet that was on offer.
So, it all comes down to the winner-takes-all match at the Green next week. Bring on Tuddenham and may the best team join Easton in Division 3 next season.
