Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 53 runs
Match report
Not sure what to say about this match, so maybe basics first: Abberton won the toss, chose to bat and smacked our bowling to all parts in reaching 329-8 from their 40 overs. We made a decent fist of the reply and on another day 276-3 would be a winning total, but not today.
Things could have been different if we hadn't shelled their opening bat White no fewer than five times as he made his way to 180, the first of which was when he had made a mere 16. Ah well, another chance will come along we said, and it did, and again; I think you get the picture! Fortunately we held on to a few later in the innings or maybe we would have been chasing 350. Bowling honours perhaps to Ollie whose 2-46 was the only spell at under a run-a-ball (and he got the prized wicket of a certain K Smith), though there were three wickets between the Nunn's (two for Rich) and Matt found some generous batsmen late on to improve his figures with a 3-for. A word of sympathy for poor Craig who showed commendable enthusiasm on a hot day for chasing a lost cause. It was relatively early in Abberton's innings and not only did Craig lose the race with the ball but his hamstring went and as a result he played no further part in the proceedings.
When the Green batted Porky managed to carry his bat for 155, which is a top class effort from a top quality batsman, but rarely can such excellence have left an empty feeling as we faltered in the run chase and never really got close to causing an upset. Talking of empty, I think young master Parker's tank was lacking in fuel for the last few overs of the innings so he did well top see it through. He was supported in a 188-run second wicket stand by Ollie, whose share was 65, but Abberton's spinners rattled through their overs and kept the scoring rate down to deny us the chance of a late innings thrash for victory.
