Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 47 runs...

Match report EAG 1st XI vs St. Osyth

On a cold wet day, skipper James Warner rightly lost the toss and the Green were put in to bat. Luke Keeble and captain fantastic himself opened up, the perfect mix of experience and impetuous youth. However it was the experienced head who perished first, nicking one to the keeper. Warner however continued to bat, before holing out later in the innings. The rest of the batting line-up chipped in along the way as the Green looked set for a good score.

The ever reliable Rich Polley scored 19, bringing the second-most talented Sri Lankan on the pitch to the crease. Nipuna Ukwatte tore up the bowling attack, hitting balls to corners of the field that were previously undiscovered. The end result was a career high 35. At the other end Jonty Lennard-Jones was ably supporting, spanking a Chinese cut to the boundary along the way to an imperious 16 not out. Unfortunately Nippy lost his wicket on the last ball of the innings. Attempting a straight six to finish, he fell agonisingly short, getting caught and bowled. At the end of the innings EAG were 220-6.

As the Green took to the field fashion sense went out the window in favour of warmth. Tom Lissimore sported an extra shirt that would have been baggy on Jack Airey’s ripped body. The prize for ingenuity however went to Luke Keeble who wore his tracksuit bottoms underneath his white trousers. Brilliant as this appeared at the time, it soon turned out to be a rash decision as the sun turned up 2 overs into St. Osyth’s response!

The score was starting to look easily gettable as Nippy’s hero started to tee off. Sri Lankan #1 looked like he was set for a big score before Jack Smith pinned him LBW with what could be the most important wicket of his short cricketing career to date. This gave the Green added life in the field, glad to have seen the back of the danger man. Josh Lennard-Jones, in his natural position at backward point, pulled off a spectacular diving stop from a shot that looked on its way to Colchester Town Centre. How it didn’t take his hand off I have absolutely no idea! This seemed to inspire wicket keeper Danny Guy who took two dismissals in one ball! Not content with the probable catch behind, he made a sharp stumping which was given by the square leg umpire. All the bowlers did a good job, Steely, Nippy and Rich Polley taking two wickets each, and Woody, Jack, and Tom Aston taking one. Richard took the pick of the wickets, a nonchalant one handed catch off his own bowling. The end result was a 50 run victory, having bowled the opposition out with 2 overs left.

A very satisfying double over opponents we have struggled to beat in the past.

Oh, and James hit 122 with Nippy’s “broken” bat. Apparently it has no middle. 7 fours and 8 sixes says otherwise! Not bad.
