Brightlingsea II v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) on Sat 19 Jul 2025 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Whilst most teams were indoors avoiding the rain, EAG 2nd XI were fortunate enough to be playing a 30 over-a-side match in drizzle and then tropical sunshine at Brightlingsea.

The wicket looked rough, the outfield slow and the Green side was full of bowlers - so fielding first was the obvious plan. Of course, stand in skipper Collins then lost the toss and EAG were asked to bat first.

The Brightlingsea opening bowlers kept a tight line and runs were hard to come by. The majority of the EAG top order got themselves in but then couldn't build an innings and by half way (over 15) EAG were on a lowly 46-4, which included 13 runs in the 15th over. Nico Dormant (19, score not age) got things moving, and then a partnership of 34 between Jens Wair (36 not out) and Sam Collins (17), with a cameo from James Woodcock (3 not out) steered the Green to 121-7 off their allotted 30 overs. This felt a little below par, but given a tough wicket and slow outfield it gave the Green a chance. For Brightlingsea's part they bowled tidily and fielded well, conceding just 5 extras (make a note of that).

With a fast drying outfield and moderate score to defend the Green needed to bowl and field well. Luke Coppin (1-23) and Dev Agrawal (2-20) led the bowling attack and although wickets fell steadily, Brightlingsea kept up with the required run rate. We were on a collision course with a close finish.

Jens Wair was a fiend in the field taking 4 catches, including an acrobatic one off Nitja Patel's fingers, and the run rate increased to 5 an over for the last 10 overs. Unfortunately, extras remain a thorn in the side of our second XI and conceding 20 in thirty overs (with no byes I might add, well done keeper Matt Norris), kept Brightlingsea in the game.

It came down to a thrilling final over with Brightlingsea just edging a victory with 2 balls remaining.

It was a strange game where EAG were probably marginally better with bat and ball and yet came out the loser. Our team played with great spirit and energy and wins await us if we can replicate this performance in the coming weeks.

Man of the match was Jens Wair with the games highest score (36 not out), 2 wickets and 4 catches.
