Match report
As EAGCC 2 XI rolled up to Harwich Saturday, for the belated season opener, the sunshine was lovely for a day at the seaside, an ironic contrast to the weather that had seen our first 3 games called off. Unfortunately for Harwich, the winters rain had not left their pitch unaffected either as we won the toss and decided to bowl on a very green wicket buried in a thick outfield.
It was like peak 2019 again (when we last were promoted from div 9 for club historians) as Troy Collins opened the bowling down the hill for a Keith Steel like 11 overs straight where he did not miss his spot once (2-15). This in tandam with a tight opening spell from Nitya Patel (1-30) and good catches from, Patel, Collins Jr and debutant Oli Kearin gave us a strong start as Harwich were 50-3 at drinks.
However, the Harwich batsman adapted well and despite a debut 5-38 (8) from Josh Fowler his first ever 5- (don't worry Josh you can buy a jug after next game), they scrambled their way to 135 off full 40 overs a very respectable score given conditions.
Shout out also to Ellliot Walkers tidy wicketkeeper on debut on a difficult surface, saved us a lot of runs and picked up his first EAGCC stumping.
Second half, our batsman struggled to score early. The opening bowlers from Harwich hit their lines very efficiently and we struggled to get them away. However, thanks to some sensible batting from Collins Sr (14) and 4th debutant (showing how well we did to be in this game) Ed Bradbury (22), we were level with Harwich at 48-2 after 20 overs at half way.
Despite the best efforts from Jack Axon (31*) and Oli Kearin (13) we were unable to up the run rate as Harwich did in the second half of our innings. After a final 6 overs of baseball style swings many of which were "strikes" from Murray (19) for a late partnership with Axon of 35 which was broken with a last ball run out, this was only enough to get us to 120, agonisingly just 15 runs short.
Well played to Harwich who adapted to conditions better than us for their win, game played in a nice spirit, looking forward to the return fixture at the green.
A lot of postives to take from this game, 4 debuts all of whom had a positive contribution, opening bowlers dominating opposition batsman and a good attitude shown throughout by all.
Onwards and upwards everyone, great effort and great foundations to build on to make the remainder of this season really successful.
POTM - shared between Josh Fowler debut 5-38 and Troy Collins 2-15 (11) economy rate of 1.36.
PS. Carshare score of 4 this week but forgot to take a photo. If you are passionate about saving the planet volenteer to become carbon champion so this isn't something else I can forget to do each week please.
