Match report In our first game of the season we fell tantalisingly short of victory against West Mersea. On a quick outfield, the Green’s mix of youth and experience did well to restrict Mersea to 173-4 in their 40 overs, built around 116 from their opening batsman. Everyone bowled and fielded well, and it was good to see a brace of Woodcocks bowling in tandem - it was the first time Alastair and son James had played together in a league game. As it turned out later, we could have done without the 5 penalty runs awarded when the ball hit Tim Chambers' keeper’s helmet on the ground.

Craig Axon (26) and Duncan Wyatt (28) got the Green off to a cracking start in reply, but 63-0 quickly became 96-6 as wickets tumbled. A partnership of 45 in 7 overs between Tim Chambers (34*) and Felix Friedlein (30) rescued us and at 141-6 it looked as if we might win comfortably. But Felix was out with 33 still needed and the required run rate of over 6 an over with only three wickets left proved too much against tight bowling.

Well done to Felix, whose wicket maiden in his first over and 30 runs from 25 balls earned him the Colchester Brewery Man of the Match award, and thanks to captain Duncan for an enjoyable game in which everyone got a go.
