Eight Ash Green Cricket Club North Essex 1st XI (Sunday) v Boxted CC on Sun 09 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 33 runs

Match report The Green secured a second consecutive victory in the NECL in a low scoring affair that for some time was in the balance. Our eventual victory margin was 33 runs, but when Boxted were almost half way to the target of 148 for the loss of only one wicket they looked well placed to go away with the points.
With apologies to a certain CRGS alumnus (if I can use that moniker for ex staff as well as ex pupils), our opening partnership was somewhat pedestrian as we struggled to get the ball off the square. Young Tom Lee hit a few lusty blows before he fell for 20, but top score belonged to the quiet man of the team Duncan Wyatt (36 and no, that's not his age). Duncan did his utmost to get the scoreboard ticking over and enjoyed a lengthy stay at the crease as he saw off a succession of batting partners. Matt Parker tried to look like a batsman for once, but it was an all too brief appearance as he fell for 14, a score matched by Thanuja Gunaratna in his first match for the best part of two seasons. A late innings push came from Bevin Guthrie (an unbeaten 20 at a run-a-ball), as he returned to us to escape the New Zealand winter, but we fell just short of the third batting point.
Boxted's openers looked quite comfortable for some time, although they were hardly racing towards the winning post. The introduction of the spin threat of Matt Parker (is he really re-inventing himself?) saw the first breakthrough, but it was his second wicket, after another partnership was developing, that precipitated the eventual collapse of the Boxted innings from 71-1 to 114 all out. Matt finished with a very economical 3-21, while Bevin caused all sorts of problems to the batsmen in taking 2-17. Outdoing both was a buoyant Ajula Gunasekera who in 3 eventful overs snared four wickets for a mere 5 runs; now wouldn't those figures look good on an electronic scoreboard? The Boxted challenge was finally extinguished by Ethan Wyatt, who deserved his wicket for continually putting the ball in the right place and offering very little for the batsmen to score from.
