Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) v Braintree III on Sat 30 Aug 2025 at 12.30pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
The second XI continued their strong finish to their league campaign with a hard fought home victory over a competitive Braintree team.
Our stand in captain, once again, lost the toss and Braintree elected to bat on a flat, dry wicket. However, it was the EAG seam bowling pair of Ross Warne and Dev Agrawal who soon got on top finding plenty of swing and pace from the wicket. Braintree's scoring rate was kept in check, but only one wicket fell in the first dozen overs. The switch to spin had an immediate impact on the match. Braintree decided this was their chance to get the run rate up - but the green's spin duo of Luke Coppin and Jens Wair had other ideas. Some superb bowling, backed by a commendable fielding performance saw Braintree reduced from 46-1 to 105-8. Wair was a threat on every delivery taking 3-40 in his 11 over spell. At the other end Coppin went for a miserly 17 runs off his 11 overs, with 2 wickets to boot. The final 3 wickets were then taken leaving EAG a target of 124 to win the match.
To Braintree's credit they bowled exceptionally well with opening bowler Leigh Garner taking 4-25. EAG found themselves on 16-2, and then 53-4 as they struggled to take control of the match. A partnership or a bold innings from one batter was required and that was duly supplied by Ross Warne, with a cultured 39 not out, supported by Wair (11) and Connor Amos (9 not out) and victory was secured for the loss of 7 wickets in the 36th over.
Ross Warne was duly awarded player of the match.
Three consecutive wins has moved our 2nd XI up to 6th place in the league. With everyone else finished, our final game against 5th place Brightlingsea is a battle to see who can finish 4th. Something for to aim for in our final match!
