West Mersea II v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) on Sat 26 Jul 2025 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report After last year many arrived at Mersea with relife that we were set up on their main pitch and pavilion. Once again we won the toss and now the days temperatures in the 30s seem a distance memory captain Murray didn't hesitate to chose to bowl first.

This decision seemed vindicated immediately as Argarwal (1-14) bowled a tight first over before captain Murray (1-30) struck with his first ball with match as one bounced on the Mersea batsman and he popped it up for S.Simpson waiting gleefully to take his chance.

Agrawal continued to swing the ball miles and in a typical spell for his found that the amount he conceded in extras (7) was the same as the batsman manged to score off his legitamate deliveries in his 9 over spell. It was only in his third over that he picked up his wicket with a full toss that swung in a long way and totally deceived the batsman.

T.Collins (1-32) came on for Murray early and continued the pressure on the Mersea batsman leaving them little scoring options. The pressure told as he picked up a wicket and Mersea looked in trouble at 22-3.

Dispite good bowling and the ball going in the air a couple of times we were not able to break the next partnership before drinks. Even as leading wicket taker Coppin (0-16) entered the game the Mersea batsman stood resilient. However at 53-3 at half way they knew they would have to accelerate in the second half to give us anything to chase.

Collins continued to toil and found the edge 3 times alas frustratingly nothing going to hand. Wair (1-25) was eventually the one to break the partnership at 88-4 in the 30th over. At the time a breakthrough but the batsman who then entered hit an impressive 39 off 28, dispite quite good bowling from Wair, Frost (0-21) and Murray, to get Mersea to a half decent total.

148-4 leaving us 149 to win.

The chase was somewhat delayed as Mersea had finished their innings in the drizzle, the drizzle got harder and turned to rain as we sat and watched it pour for about an hour and a quarter before being able to restart. Very greatful to the Mersea covers who dispite the delay got us back to the quiz evening at the green only about an hour late.

As we started the outfield was wet, not to the amusement of our batsman as they soon realised this meant more running for them even from a good shot. Dispite this Frost (17) and Polley (19) started a solid chase and put on 30 together before Frost fell trying to agress of a ball that didn't bounce as much as he expected.

This enebaled S.Collins (37) to come to the crease. Sam accelerated the run rate just as needed and showed why he's the top scorer for the 2s so far this season.

At drinks we had reached 63-2, solid but behind the required rate still.

Not long after Polley fell, with the score at 87, this enebaled Wair (15)  to come to the crease. Together with Collins he put on a fast 20 runs pretty much running Collins into the ground. At 107 Collins played a tired shot was bowled but we were now sitting a good position.

S.Simpson (4*) joined Wair in the middle, but struggled to score off the Mersea bowling. Wair also going for a big shot missed it and was bowled after a valuable contribution.

At 122-4 we still need 27 to win and only had 7 overs to do it. The game was very much alive until T.Collins (27*) decided he had to get to bed for his shift tomorrow. In a spell of only 2.4 overs, some of which faced by Simpson, Collins scored all 27 needed smashing 6 boundaries in a brutal cameao.

A good performance and well deserved 6 wicket win for the green.

POTM - After the bowling innings Agrawal looked a shoe in this week for his spell only going at 1.75 an over.

S.Collins then put his name firmly in the hat with his backbone innings accelerating at exactly the time we needed.

But POTM this week has to got to T.Collins. 11 overs for only 32 and despite only collecting 1 wicket it's fair to say he deserved more. But the telling contribution was his inning of 27* to finish the game. Well played Troy.
