Chappel & Wakes Colne II v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) on Sat 31 May 2025 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 85 runs

Match report Chappel away was always likley to be a tough fixture for the 2s this week. As our team of older and younger generations turned up at Chappel we watched as their team of prime athletes trapsed into their changing rooms.

For the first time this year we won the toss and things were looking up. Favouring to bowl first to know what we had to chase on a good looking pitch with 1 short boundary, took some of the opposition by supprise.

In humid conditions Amos (2-45) and Murray (2-20) opened the bowling and after 10 overs had restricted Chappel to 50-1, Murray with the breakthrough after good pressure applied by both.

After 11 overs Coppin (2-58) and Wair (4-55) came on and slowed the pace of the game. Coppin struck early in his spell and as wickets fell consistently for the next 20 overs one Chappel batsman kept them in the game.

Wair picked up 4 wickets including a reflex catch at slip by Murray, 2 catches in the deep by Amos and a clean bowled effort from a viciously spinning delivery.

During his spell Coppin broke the big 5th wicket partnership with a good caught and bowled, but this was a partnership of miss chances as dropped catches once again haunted the 2s whilst these batsman put in 50.

The spin twins were bowled out by over 33, and had left Chappel 178-7. With limited other options Murray turned back to his openers and Amos delivered in his first over forcing the Chappel number 3, who had become a thorn in our side, to chip the ball to Wair at mid off.

Dispite doubts over his fitness Murray followed by bowling a tight over and picking up the 9th wicket from the other end.

Amos then stepped up and blew the number 11 away with a good yorker in the second over of his spell. Chappel all out for 191 off only 37.4 overs.

Fielding was not easy in the heat and the whole team worked well to continually chase the ball. Special shout out to Nico Dormant who, with lack of experienced options, donned the wicket keeper gloves for the first time on a Saturday and did a very good job throwing himself around under a hot helmet for 40 overs.

Our chase began solidly, Polley (26) and Jayasooriya (7) looked solid agaisnt 2 very capable opening bowlers and although runs wernt flowing, they obviously had Chappel frustrated. Unfortunately, Jayasooriya was trapped LBW in the 5th over and an early short delivery saw Collins (0) caught in the same over. At 10-2 we looked in trouble.

Amos (14), off the back of a potm innings last week, joined Polley and the pair batted well together. A partnership of 46 took us to 56 before Polley lost his wicket to a vicious spinning delivery.

This sadly was the start of a classic EAG mini collapse, as Wair (0) was out in the same over and Amos lost his wicket the next over to a good one handed catch at slip.

Dormant (6) and Coppin (18) regained some calm for us, before Dormant was again spun out.

S.Simpson (11*) joined Coppin at the crease briefly before Coppin was caught at point.

Ratnayaka (0) was blown away first ball by a fast bouncer from Chappel and at 85-8 it looked all but game over.

A nice moment occurred when C.Simpson (4) joined his dad and hit his first Saturday runs with a lovely shot through cover and got us over 90 to a batting bonus point. Sadly this did not last much longer as overs later C.Simpson spooned up a catch to mid on.

Murray (0) joined S.Simpson for a very short time before having a big swing at the wrong ball meaning the innings and the game was done.

A lot of positives from the bowling and fielding display but comfortably beaten by the better side on the day.

Having played multiple games against teams at the top of the league there is still optimism in the side as we have fixtures coming up agaisnt the teams around us. Onto next week.

POTM. Amos made a good shout bowling a good spell, picking up his first Saturday wickets and taking 2 good catches.

But POTM this week goes to Wair for his 4 wickets and catch in the field.
