Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Halstead II on Sat 11 Aug 2018 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Halstead's wicketkeeper is likely to have a sleepless night after giving Stuart a life in only the second over of the innings; he then had to watch as Stuart masterfully guided the Green to victory with an unbeaten 89 on what was a really challenging track to bat on.
When the sun was still shining Stephen had won the toss and had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat first. Mark and Oli each bowled 15 overs straight through and although they regularly threatened the outside edge, the wickets didn't tumble quite as we had hoped. Mark was economical and always a threat, but ultimately remained wicketless, while Oli added three more to his tally for the season, including one to a smart low catch at slip from Matt. The pressure created by the bowlers meant that none of the batsmen were able to push on to a big score. The other wickets went to JP & Stephen, but a gritty batting effort meant that we missed out on maximum bowling points.
As if his bowling spell wasn't enough, Oli took the opportunity provided by an absent Porky to open the batting with Stuart and played a couple of decent shots before falling. Indeed, that was the tale of our innings as the middle order came and went, often after looking good; the fact that extras were second-top scorer tells the tale. All the while Stuart continued to accumulate runs - he would never claim that it was his most fluent innings, but Stuart read the situation superbly, overcame the difficult conditions and ultimately saw us home to a four wicket victory.
