Eight Ash Green Cricket Club PieRates XI v Chappel & Wakes Colne on Wed 03 Jun 2015 at 18:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
The first pleasant Wednesday evening of the year at the green greeted the PIErates yesterday. The team however were determined to approach this top o’ table clash with uncharacteristic sincerity in their course for a league win. Just one debutant this week as the side begins to settle in the form of Strident employee of the year Keith Hammond. The ‘rates were also without vice craptain Matt Parker who was busy holding one ice pack to his splinted shins and another to his exasperated brain box whilst toiling to avoid submitting another un-gradable business studies paper on Thursday.
As the crowds began to accrue and having cleared up the league’s ‘guest players’ absurdity with the Chappel captain (who didn’t laugh when captain Woodhouse said that he needn't worry about our guest player as he was in a wheelchair hiding behind a tree – it was in fact Keith), the two tossed and the PIErates elected to bowl first.
Mixed opening spells with the orange ball from openers JP Purser and Jens permitted a strong scoring start from the away side (has something happened to Jens recently or something?). JP also teed up one opener with a juicy short ball which he planted into the side of cricketing legend Jordan Ellis’s car – invoice in the post JP…. CWCCC were somewhere in the 80s after 7 overs with little improvement offered by captain Woodhouse who ensured his fines from Richard Parker were typically numerous post-game. The ‘rates were rescued by an impressive bowling spell by the OStove, removing one of their openers on 49 prompting much schadenfreude from the fagPIEs afterwards. Charlie Lovejoy also tested both batsman and sibling wicket keeper to the max both taking one wicket and stretching the umpire’s patience on the wide limit. CWCCC finished on 140, a score the ‘rates were not wholly unhappy with given the start they had conceded.
The PIErates’ hopes with its bat-heavy side of a strong chase were vindicated as O. Lovejoy and Keith ebbed out to the crease first up. Technical accuracy and patience for the abundant bad ball typified both innings, both Pie-guzzlers scoring at over a run a ball. Keith lasted to about half way until caught off a skied outside edge with an elegant 34 while Lovejoy persisted into the final over to rack up another impressive knock for the PIErates of 73 from 55 balls. Steve Nunn in at 3 ensured a coast in to the finish line, waiting for the inevitable full toss or long hop and hoiking them over cow corner.
The terminus of Lovejoy’s innings was greatly begrudged by team doughnut specialist and PIE connoisseur Luke Keyboard who doesn’t seem to like cricket any more as his stomach’s concerns override his teams’. Anyway, a one run innings for him and a 26 run innings for Steve and the PIErates had won with an over and a half to spare.
Now securely top of the table, the PIErates settled in the pavilion for the now traditional symphony of warm F J Martin & Son PIE, accompanying pint and panging comments and fine-bucket shaking from el Presidenté and umpire Richard Parker. Back to normal lackadaisical play next week!
Thanks to all those who came to watch this week and of course to scorer DStove and umpire Richard Parker. Let’s all spare a thought for Matt Parker as he wipes the tears from his poor little shins after his exam today.
Keep the availability updated as well you little sh*^s!!
