Gt Bromley v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club PieRates XI on Wed 22 Apr 2015 at 18:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 36 runs
Match report
The debut outing for the Wednesday (name pending sponsorship) 20/20 side against Gt Bromley rung with positive notes, all of which combined in concert to a solid and enjoyable win. Owing to the early sunset time at this time of year, the two captains elected to crop the innings to 12 x 8 ball overs per side before hapless captain Andrew Woodhouse lost the toss and we were put in to bat against the orange ball.
Let’s begin with some adjectives to describe the batting each of which applies in equal measure and in order: promising, flailing, blind, self-sacrificial.
Steve Nunn opened proceedings along with the Green’s rowdy smoked kipper Tony Lee (no, there wasn’t meant to be an S in front of kipper). The masses who had gathered to watch our clash of titans were treated to consummate strokes from each opener including excellent technical shots on the leg-side from Steve to reach a classy 37 before chipping a catch and some well-timed punches (!) from Tony to reach his 14 before gifting the bowler with the holy grail: only off and leg stumps remaining whilst the middle one cartwheeled off into the next field.
Enter our podgy pinch hitter, Luke Keyboard. Having strutted to the crease guffawing and panting, Luke’s innings ran thusly: just the one boundary, albeit a six, meaning Luke managed to canter between the creases on no fewer than 11 occasions. One of these ending up in the merciless sending back and resultant duck for Ollie Stovell. The rest of the team knew by now that this was a sign Luke’s fitness had run its course (pun intended). They were right, out for 17 having earned a ribbing in the bar afterwards from umpire Richard Parker who has now christened him “Fat Luke”.
After a swift entrance and departure for spirited cricketing novice Jordan Ellis, the innings was re-stabilised by Matt Murray and Jonathan “JP” Purser who hit a string of boundaries and rotated the strike well to reach a 30 that could only be terminated by a selfless case of suicide running on the last ball.
The team bowled well throughout, preventing Bromley reaching our modest total in their 12 overs. A solid start enacted by Matt Parker was continued by our 3-man spin attack (O. Stovell, M Murray and A Woodhouse) who demonstrated great early season control, bowling full and straight, varying flight and waiting for the batters to fall into the trap.
JP also bowled an economical couple of overs with only a couple of angry wides declared by Richard Parker. The team’s heart shot into it’s collective mouth as the first wicket fell; the orange ball made for a hard fast trajectory towards the boundary but only found the clammy grasp of the Captain’s assistant Matt Parker – in the end a great catch in the deep. Once the ball was safely taken and Matt had pirouetted with joy however, it was with great regret that the team discovered he had violently soiled himself in the process.
Captain Woodhouse made another fool of himself whilst spiritedly chasing a well struck ball. In relentless pursuit at breakneck speed, the 22 year old’s body seemed to overtake his legs to the extent of a full speed forward roll - a cause for raucous laughter around the ground particularly from "Fat Luke" Keyboard and poo-panter Matt Parker.
Each team member had to neck an Asda ale in the changing room afterwards as forfeit for fielding mistakes and drinks were quaffed subsequently in the bar.
Overall a great start for the team that was enjoyed by all.
Thanks must go to Dave Stovell for scoring, Richard Parker for umpiring and making sure the 12 yard run up was adhered to.
Roll on next week against Gt. Horkesley and Lexden at The Green!
