Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v St Osyth CC on Sat 06 Jun 2015 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 37 Runs
Match report
(W)Alli Hammond’s 1st XI took on St Osyth at home this week on a very clement day indeed. The heath shimmered with splendour as the team arrived early to train before the match and prep the club ’ouse. A couple o’ 2’s players were called up this week in the form of fat Luke Keyboard and Andrew Woodhouse who also deigned to stand in as wicket keeper for Joe Old.
Following the toss, Wally Hammond elected to bat first and the game was afoot. Strident openers Steve Nunn and Keith confidently made their way to the crease, anticipating St Osyth to be little more than an average side. This seemed to have been confirmed during the first over but the second was to prove a different story. A nifty left arm seamer came on and quickly mopped up steve who mis-timed a well angled delivery across him to cover. Keith swung at a few as well but thankfully missed and quickly gained a better idea of what to leave and what to take – a skill he most likely developed during his marathon stint at Strident.
Next in waddled Luke Keyboard, still chewing his 4th medium-rare bacon sandwich of the morning courtesy of Mark Goodall. Andrew, who was umpiring at the time was slightly abashed to see that he had also spilt some ketchup and grease on the back of his bat. Keyboard was not to last long either against the left-armer as he misread the line of one that came back and took his leg stump.
Jack Smith replaced Luke and initially looked good against the left armer, playing the ball as late as possible – always a good sign for a batsman’s form. Jack went on to score a few at the other end, but also departed after a while for 23.
The green were looking in trouble at this stage after those quick wickets despite Keith’s now Tendulkarian levels of resistance. Big frame, small brain Ally Hammond (7) came in and offered a short stand with Keith before Mark Goodall (0) and Ed “the B-52 bomber” Lambert-Clarke (17) also fell cheaply.
Keith was still there however and looking in very good touch indeed, picking the correct balls to attack and giving no chances to the opposition. Ollie Firmintation (14) came in late in the innings and hit some nice strokes as Keith reached his hundred, cretinously getting out off the last ball of the innings to clip the wings of his soaring average.
EAG’s innings ended on 193 for 8, a not wholly unsatisfactory score but it is noteworthy that without Keith’s score, things would have been a lot different.
St Osyth came into bat and also lost wickets quickly. Gooders providing the first breakthrough with a tidy lbw shout and the second with a stunning caught and bowled effort that Chris Jordan would be proud of. Ollie firminator seemed to struggle from both ends to achieve his customary consistency leading some team members speculated that his frequent trips to the bogs may have had something to do it…
The visitors more or less made like Woolworth’s branches and shut up shop for the day providing a positively yawnworthy remainder of the afternoon for all involved. Nonetheless wickets fell to Ali Hammond with his javelin off-spinners, Steve Nunn with his stinky little nibblers and Alex Hammond bowling his typical array of seam, wrist spin and everything between.
Overall a fairly uneventful game that the green were disappointed not to have mopped up earlier but credit where it’s due, St Osyth played the test match format and just about staid the course. Good luck next week against Felixstowe and to Luke Keyball’s 2’s at home vs. Halstead, particularly with a more or less full team!
