Match report The King is Dead, Long live the King.

When EAG 2nd's defeated Copford two weeks ago we replaced them at the top of the league. Fast forward and Copford returned the favour and in doing so replaced us at the top of the league. The winning margin, 7 wickets, suggests this was a one sided game but the reality was very different.

EAG won the toss and decided to bat first. The wicket was green but skipper Collins was confident in his team's batting following some terrific recent performances, and his optimism was justified with an excellent score of 238-6. Jack Axon top scored with 96 not out and he was ably supported by Hansana Gunasekera (32) and Connor Amos (23).

The half time team talk was all about repeating previous good standards of bowling and fielding and the reality is we didn't manage to meet these expectations. Seven bowlers were used in total and none could bring the kind of control needed to restrict the batters and dropping 4 catches, none of them easy, compounded the challenge. Even then Copford were on, or even just behind, the required run rate throughout the innings. When push came to shove Copford had the experience needed to get over the line and EAG lacked the inspiration needed to swing the result in our favour.

As we look at the table, EAG are third in what looks like a four team race for promotion. Our next two games are against two of our closest rivals, West Mersea and Braintree. Although we lost this week we showed enough to give us confidence that we are good enough to win this league - but we must play at our very best to do so. Roll on next week.
