Coggeshall Town CC III v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) on Sat 17 May 2025 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets
Match report
EAG 2s were youthful looking as most were dropped off by parents for our first away game of the season at Coggeshall on Saturday. A Saturday debut for Amos and a further 7 players with 5 or less Saturday games under their belt was one of the more inexperienced teams we are likely to put out this season.
Coming off a good result last week agaisnt Mersea, the 2s took on the early league leaders with good spirit and hope. However, it's fair to say that this experience was a number of positves wrapped up in a game that didn't go our way from start to finish.
All good losses start with the losing of the coin toss, and with that Coggeshall decided to bowl first putting pressure on our batting.
Their experienced opening bowling did for Freidlein (0) and Walker (2) within the first 3 overs and their decsion was immediately vincidated.
These wickets brought Collins (41) and Amos (13) to the crease who both initially struggled. However, Amos at one point decided it was time to change the momentum and hit some classy agressive shots that put their opening bowler onto the back foot. Unfortunately his aggression was over enthusiastic as he missed one in the 8th over and was bowled but had provided an important change in momentum for our innings.
S.Simpson (23) joined Collins at 21-3 and together they batted very sensibly and put on 50. The pitch giving good reward to well hit shots and the outfield like lightning made this partnership have a good highlights package.
This stabilising partnership took us to 76 in the 25th over before Simpson was run out trying to up the run rate.
Coppin (33*) joined Collins at the crease and continued what they had stated increasing the run rate. However, to score more runs you have to take more risks as Collins fell trying to hit a 4 to a catch at cover leaving us 88-5.
Over the next 5 overs, Dormant (4) and C Simpson (0) ran well with Coppin but no shots seemed to be able to find the boundary, the run rate was once again stalling, 108-7.
This was until in the 32nd over Kolhe (12*) joined Coppin and with some aggressive shots the pair put on a fast 34 to bring us to a total of 142 from our alloted overs. A score that felt low, but something to bowl at, a credit to our batting determination.
Kolhe (0-18) opened the bowling and after initially struggling for control on his length found some constancy. In search for a new role in the team, slow bowler Murray (0-25) opened the other end and dispite good control of line and length he didn't have much luck with wickets and was put away with some classy shots from the Coggeshall opening batsman.
This caused Murray to turn to Coppin (2-23) early, this immediately worked as the Coggeshall opener hit another ball in the air this time to a willing Collins at short cover and we had our breakthrough at 45-1.
It was nervous for a few overs from the Coggeshall batsman point of veiw as they struggled to get away the EAG bowling for a few overs but did well to dig in.
After this, Todd (0-23) replaced Murray followed by Dormant (0-27) but the Coggeshall batsman continued to look stable and confident as they ticked off the runs.
Just before drinks however a mistake from the opener gave Coppin his second wicket, a slower ball misjudged and chipped straight back to the bowler meant it was 96-2. This gave us a hope of a miracle comeback.
Amos (0-14) came on for Dormant and looked threatening bowling a heavy bouncing ball, something other bowlers had struggled to do.
However, the youthful Coggeshall batters continued to play very sensibly, defensively seeing off the dangerous Coppin and scoring as chances arose.
Freidlein (0-3) bowled a good over at the end but we had run out of runs to defend before he could bowl more. Shout out to Walker who dived around a lot behind the stumps and saved many potential byes and wides with his glove work.
Coggeshall completed their chase in the 29th over competing a resounding victory. A defeat for the Green but some positives to take from a young team who gave it a go.
Not a total game to forget for the green as a lot of positves came from an inexperience team, but a lot of things to build on if we are to compete this season.
POTM - Potm was a close one between two of our experienced players on the day. Collins had a good shout with a well fought 41 at a difficult time to bat and a catch. However, POTM was Coppin for his 33* batting higher than usual and 2-23 from his 11 with the ball picking up our only wickets and keeping pressure on the Coggeshall batting.
