Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
At 12:30 there was a little uncertainty around as to whether Kirby had not got the message that we were playing at Mistley. Our team were ready to go but no sign or sounds of anyone from Kirby dispite texts and emails.
However, they rocked up at 12:45, and with the sun shining strong we were ready for a game of cricket.
We won the toss and with conditions hot and a good looking pitch decided to have a bat and set a total, a tactic that us yet to work for us this season, maybe next time we'll have to brave the heat.
Frost (0) and Jayasooriya (17) opened, but it only took the first over to show the pitch had some demons. A fast ball just short of a length climbed on Forst and he could only glove it up to the keeper.
Smith (7) came in at 3, and looked secure until one didn't bounce on him and was bowled.
This brought Patel (8) to the crease. He started the counter attack with some big shots including a controversial 6, but was soon caught after pushing a full toss to midwicket. Not the most pleased a no ball wasn't called he departed.
Amos (0) didn't last long as he was trapped LBW early and at 27-4 we were in big trouble.
Collins (17) and Jayasooriya had our first meaningful partnership of 26 before Jayasooriya was also trapped LBW.
Dormant (44) came in a tough conditions and after a chat about how he had plenty of time and to build, hit one almost immediately over midwicket off middle stump for a huge 6 from an incredibly clean hit.
He and Collins continued past drinks and put on 27 together before Collins was completely out foxed by a slow loopy delivery from the kirby spinner. He must have wandered back to the pavilion with a tatse of his own medicine in his mouth after that mode of dismissal.
Coppin (1), who had been scoring important runs this season, failed to contribute with the bat as he missed a good one soon after and at 87-7 we were in big big trouble.
Enter Agrawal (17), after some unorthodox slashes, it would be remiss for me not to mention the shot that got the biggest cheer of the day as one drifted onto his pads and he dispatched it over midwicket for 6.
However, the 6 should not overshadow what was an incredibly important innings as him and Dormant put on 49 together in a fantastic partnership. Dormant continued to look very comfortable putting away bad balls easily in the innings of the day.
Sadly, on 44, Dormant went for 1 shot too many and missed a straight one. However, he had done his job and got us something to bowl at.
Murray (8*) came in and before he faced his second ball saw Agrawal back away and glove behind a sharp delivery from the bowler.
This meant Ratnayake (2) and Murray were the last chance to have something to bowl at. Both struggled to time it as they stuck around without really moving on the score before Ratnayake going for a bigger shot mistimed it and chipped it back to the bowler for a simple catch.
147 all out, a disappointing total but one that could have been at lot worse and looked to be at one point. We had something to bowl at.
Patel (2-51) and Argarwal (2-48) both bowled mamouth spells at the top of the bowling innings, both looking likley to get more wickets than they did the Kirby batsman rode their luck and put away short deliveries. Once the pair had got the first wicket 3 more fell quickly and at 67-4 we felt we were right in it.
However just by keeping out the bowling Kirby batsman moved the score on and were 81-4 at drinks.
Coppin (0-15) was brought into the attack but was unable to force a breakthrough and so with only 40 runs left to play with captain Murray turned to Collins (2-22), his rouge bowling option.
This worked as Collins took 2 quick wickets, the first a good catch by Frost out at midwicket and the second revenge for his own dismissal as the batsman swung over a slow one and was bowled.
However, after the wickets his line drifted and the new batsman helped themselves to a couple of easy boundaries.
In a last ditch effort Murray (0-5) put himself on and although the batsman struggled to score off him couldn't find the wickets as Kriby knocked off the last runs needed.
In the end a disappointing defeat, it felt like we were in the game as wickets fell but struggled with probably not enough runs on the baord.
Incase anyone actually reads my match reports a huge thank you to Mistley for hosting us and helping out prepare the pitch for out game.
POTM is a difficult decision this week. For the first time this season I have struggled to split the pair and therefore the award shall be split between Dormant for his 44 with the bat and getting us back into the game, and Argarwal for his 17 and 2-48, an important innings to support Dormant and a spell that deserved more wickets and kept us interested for a long period.
