Kirby II v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) on Sat 28 Jun 2025 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Temperatures peaked at 32° degrees in our batting innings at Kirby. Safe to say it was a hot one.
In a moment of pure madness captain Murray chose to bat after winning the toss, possibly a first in his nearly 4 years of captaincy. Once he had been cleared of heat stroke after that inexplicable decision, our innings started.
Frost (42) and Wyatt (2) opened up for us agaisnt some bowling from Kriby on a pitch that had some life in it to say the least. After fending off some tough bowling Wyatt fell to their opener in the 5th over, 8-1, this ended one of the better opening partnerships of the year (this is not sarcasm, seriously go back and look at the stats).
Smith (48) playing his first game in nearly 2 years came in at 3 and it looked like he'd never been away. He batted very sensibly and along with Frost put on 74 our best partnership of the year so far. The pair took advantage of some lax fielding and ran really well, putting pressure on the opposition and setting us up well at 82-2 in the 18th over just before Frost fell.
Bradbury (0) came in to join Smith but got a bouncy spinning one early and had a short stay at the crease. Amos (18) then came in and batted with Smith until the 27th over putting on a quick 37 together until he was caught going aggressively after a spinning delivery.
Collins (12) joined and continued the momentum. Some agressive shots through cover moved the score to 132 before Smith was caught agonisingly short of his 50.
Simpson (2) joined Collins and as the field tightened pressure stared to build. After some slow overs this pressure told as Collins and Simpson both fell going for agressive shots trying to up the rate.
This meant with 5 overs left Coppin (16*) and Spence (13*) were at the crease for a very strong tail end partnership. Coppin practcally running Spence into the ground with some risky runs, it's a good job Spence is a young man and could keep up with the enthusiastic Coppin. They put on a important 23 together and we got to 169-7 off our 40.
From watching the pitch be inconsistent and with the heat, this felt like a good total to defend.
Argawal (1-28) opened the bowling from one end and bowled a good 7 over spell which the batsman struggled to get away. From the other end Murray (2-32) only managed 4 overs before the heat got to him, but dispite some very loose deliveries, had an effective plan to the agressive batting which got us some early wickets. This included a good high catch at mid wicket for Simpson, his first catch for eight ash green.
The teams leading wicket taker Coppin (0-44) took over from Murray but it was not his day and wickets just did not come for him.
From the other end Spence (1-20) bowled the most entertaining over of the game. The first legitamate 2 balls going for 20 followed by 3 dots and a wicket, well caught behind by Bradbury in his wicketkeeping debut for the 2s.
Amos (0-20) and Smith (0-29) both had a quick go as Murray rang the changes in search for wickets, but nothing seemed to work.
The pick of the bowlers was probably Collins (0-4) who came on at the end and bowled 3 overs for only 4 runs, the batsman who has been helping themselves off nearly all other bowling struggled to know what to do with Colllins' lack of pace.
In the end it only took kirby 27 overs to chase down 170, with the loss of only 4 wickets but as anyone watching would tell you it felt a lot closer than that. Huge positives from our batting this week and a bit more netting needed from our bowlers is provably the take away as we go to Witham next week to start the second half of the season.
POTM - could have easily been Smith with his 48 on return to the side but POTM this well goes to Forst for his 42 in tough circumstances. Ethan anchored the first part of our innings and with Smith put us in a really strong position.
