Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) v West Mersea II on Sat 29 Jun 2024 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report 1 week on from a disappointing result away to Kirby, Eagcc 2s returned to the fortress that is Fordham heath looking to get the season back on track.

Things started well as we won the toss and decided to play to our strength, bowling. Mersea batsman were immediately on the back foot as T.Collins (1-16) hardly missed his line once in a tight 6 overs and Patel (1-20) bowled one of the most fearce spells that div 9 has seen this year. The square leg umpire looked equal parts impressed and worried as a particually fast bouncer from Patel was given a wide for height, comfortably clearing the batters head.

After the openers had done their spells an early wicket a peace from Murray (1-27) and Coppin (2-16), after quick hands to take the catch from Walker, quickly recuded Mearsea to 66-4 at drinks.

Overs 20-35 from Coppin and Guthrie provided some of the most defensive batting that the green has seen this year as only 29 runs were scored with the fall of one wicket. Even after slightly more aggressive shots for the final 5 overs tight bowling from Agrawal (0-8 from 3) meant Mersea finished on 109-5.

Pick of the bowlers was Coppin with his 11-3-16-2, but well bowled to the whole attack who's allround skill and performance gained admiration from 2 Mersea batters in the bar post game.

With 110 to win, we were confident but very aware this was 80 more than we had managed to score the previous week.

Mersea took as early wicket as 2XI leading scorer Bradbury got bowled early in the 5th over with the score 11-1. Murray added some impetus to the innings with a couple of boundaries but stipidly chased a wide one on 17 leaving us 31-2 after 10.

The fall of this wicket bought in Patel, after injuring his hamstring in the field, he channeled his inner Glen Maxwell and on one leg proceeded to hit an innings defining 44 off 53. His partnership (57) with opening batsman Polley (21) left us only 11 runs away from victory once they had both departed.

After a couple of overs of nervous batting but with the end in sight Guthrie (12*) dismissively hit a straight 4 back over the bowlers head in the 32nd over and the game was all but done.

EAGCC 2XI win by 5 wickets and remain unbeaten at home (when games are played at our home ground).

Next week we welcome Kirby to the Green as we look for revenge after their win last week.

POTM. Nitya Patel for his fast bowling spell of 1-20 and his 44 whilst batting.
